An example for her children
|
Being a single mother is hard anywhere in the world. Being a single mother in Guatemala with four children and no extended family to help can be a great challenge. But for Maria del Carmen, these circumstances have only motivated her to fight for a better future for her family. Maria is very industrious in finding ways to provide for her family. She grows corn, beans, and vegetables in her yard. She also raises chickens and sells eggs and meat to her neighbors. People come to her when they need food made for special events, like a family get-together or quinceañera. And, she washes and irons clothes and does odd jobs for people to be able to get by. All of this work happens in the morning. In the afternoon, Maria dedicates all her time to helping her children with homework.Furthering her studiesIn addition to that, Maria received a scholarship two years ago from a nearby private hospital to study nursing. She has been steadily working toward her degree ever since. "I see that employers look for people who are well prepared, mentally and academically," she says. "I want to set an example for my kids, that it is possible to move forward and improve your life." Maria del Carmen has been an exemplary student. Of the 60-some people who received a scholarship, she is one of ten to complete the program. One step remains, an internship of 550 hours. She's hoping to start in March, since the first to months of the year are very busy for her children's school activities and meetings. Finding a wayAs an intern, Maria will have to work from 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., along with some 24-hour shifts. She is not yet sure how she'll handle this schedule with young children at home. Given her success thus far, it seems very likely Maria del Carmen will find a way. Continue reading...

New classroom in San Rafael
|
A team of 23 Rotary members came down to Guatemala in early February to help build a new cement block classroom in San Rafael. It will be used for the secondary students in the afternoon and for an early childhood program led by Common Hope social workers in the morning. The classroom was initiated by the local community members, who came to Common Hope to express the need and ask for help building it.
It is a great sign that more classroom space is needed. Says Tamalyn Gutierrez, country director, "To go from junior high being a far off possibility to now there isn't enough room for the students, all since 2008, this is real progress!"
Karla Heeter and her Rotary Club in Buffalo, MN raised a portion of the money for the construction of the classroom. They helped with the rebar, mixing and pouring cement, and moving lots of dirt. They also loved getting to know some of the children who will benefit from the classroom. As a thank you, secondary students and a group of 3-4 year olds performed a small ceremony for the volunteers.
The structure isn't quite finished, but masons and community members are working on it, so it should be done within the week.

Son of Maria del Carmen needs a sponsor
| Brayam's career goals are ambitious like his mother's. He hopes to graduate from high school and then go to university for an IT related field. "I want to work in an important company managing computers and documents," he says. Bryam has found the transition to high school challenging, since he needs to travel every day into Guatemala City, but he's doing well in school, and if he stays on track, he'll graduate in three years. In his free time, Brayam likes to listen to music, practice personal defense, play basketball, play with his siblings, and help others. He also really likes nature and says his favorite season is spring.
If you can support Brayam on his journey to high school graduation, please contact Jessie Szopinski via email, call (651) 917-0917, or sponsor him online. Thank you! |
