ELAM News to Know

Your Positivity Ratio

Have you signed up yet to join us in North Carolina this January for our 2016 Professional Development Program, The Science and Practice of Positivity? Our keynote, Barbara Fredrickson, sent along some pre-work for us to do to prepare - see below for a note from her. And if you're still undecided about joining us, this pre-work is a great introduction to the life-changing information we'll be getting at this unique program!

From Barbara Fredrickson:

In preparation for "Positivity and Possibility" we invite you to develop insight into your own habitual positivity. Please visit PositivityRatio.com and take the 2-minute on-line quiz to estimate your current positivity ratio. Keep in mind that this test merely provides a snapshot of a single day. The more days that you can average together to create your estimate, the more helpful your estimated ratio becomes. Consider making time to complete this short survey every evening for 1-2 weeks prior to the Alumnae Program.  If you're interested in doing so, please follow the "On-Line Tools" tab at PositivityRatio.com to access free, on-line tracking tools.

Thank You!

Thank you to everyone who joined us at last week's networking event in Baltimore. More than 80 of you were there to make new connections, reinforce previous connections, and to discuss the future direction of our powerful ELUM community. Continue to watch the Edge for more updates and outcomes from this event.

Quote of the Day

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.

Articles of Note

Harvard Business Review, November 5, 2015:
We've all heard the figures around the gender pay gap - that women earn 70-something cents on the dollar, depending on the data source you use, compared to men. A lot of what contributes to that gap is the variance in earning potential between the industries and job types that women and men dominate, with women holding more "caretaking" jobs (e.g. healthcare, social work, education) in our society while men hold more technical jobs (e.g. engineering, computer science). Another big factor is the lack of women in high-paying leadership roles: Only 4% of S&P 500 CEOs are women, according to Catalyst.

The Chronicle of Higher Ed, Academe Today, November 6, 2015:
It's your "best alternative to a negotiated agreement," and having a strong one in hand improves your bargaining position.

Knowledge @ Wharton, Weekend Digest, November 6, 2015:
In 2012, Anne-Marie Slaughter published an essay in The Atlantic titled, "Why Women Still Can't Have It All," which became one of the most-read pieces in the magazine's history and reignited the debate about work-life balance in the United States. In the piece, she explained why she left her position as the first female director of policy planning at the U.S. State Department to return to a career that would enable her to spend more time with her family, a choice she never expected to make. As she wrote then, "[T]he decision to step down from a position of power - to value family over professional advancement, even for a time - is directly at odds with the prevailing social pressures on career professionals in the United States."
Now, in a new book, Unfinished Business: Women Men Work Family, Slaughter expands on what individuals, organizations and companies, and the government can do to support greater equality for women and men with regard to work and family.

Forbes, November 7, 2015:
When I arrived in the U.S. from India to attend college, I was excited and motivated, but also a bit lonely and overwhelmed. Alia, a distant cousin who lived nearby, often invited me to her house for holidays and provided bits of advice-from tips on how to get along with my roommate, to how to dress for my first internship. Without even asking her, Alia was my first mentor.
Most people aren't so lucky to stumble upon a great mentor. Instead we have to find people we respect and ask for their guidance. However, asking for help from a stranger can be intimidating. After all, why would a stranger, or even a close acquaintance, give up precious time to give you free advice on your career? Actually, most mentors enjoy the satisfaction of contributing to your growth, the opportunity to pass on hard-won wisdom and a chance to reflect on their own successes. But, first, you have to convince them to help you.

LinkedIn Pulse, November 8, 2015:
I'm sure you've been asked many times whether you're an introvert or an extrovert. For some people, it's an easy choice, but for most of us, it's difficult to choose one way or the other.

Center for Creative Leadership, Leading Effectively e-Newsletter, November 10, 2015:
Given the complexity of being a leader today, cognitive health is as crucial as behavior to leadership effectiveness. Find out why CCL believes it's important to be aware of the internal wiring of your leader's mind.

Fast Company, November 11, 2015:

Fast Company, November 13, 2015:

The Last Word

AAMC CFAS News, November 13, 2015:
And finally, need a shower? Maybe you need the opposite-a spritz of bacteria rather than a spray of water to wash it off. Livescience.com covered David Whitlock of Boston who has not showered in 12 years. He has developed a spray called AO+ Mist sold under the brand "Mother Dirt," which he says eliminates the need for a soapy shower by boosting the human microbiome. If you run into him at the buffet, you'll be happy to know he still washes his hands.
