Dr. Joanne Conroy (ELAM '98), AAMC's Chief Healthcare Officer, has posted an essay on the Wing of Zock innovation blog site regarding Time Magazine's cover story, "Bitter Pill: Why Medical Bills Are Killing Us." Dr. Conroy wrote, "Controlling costs and demand for health care services is a responsibility of both providers and patients. We need a commitment to develop new ways of evaluating cost and setting prices. Not only will this need to include economic, regulatory, and market-driven considerations but should be anchored in principles that incentivize healthy communities, reward prevention, and increase patient engagement."

Florida Researchers Examine Lifetime Substance Use among MDs with Suspected Impairment

Florida researchers have found that physicians undergoing supervision in a Physician's Health Program had significantly higher odds of abuse/dependence disorders for alcohol, opiates, and sedatives compared to a matched sample of the general population who had sought treatment for substance use, despite the fact that overall use of the substances was the same among the two groups. The study, led by Dr. Linda Cottler (ELAM '07), was reported in the Journal of Addiction Medicine.

AAMC CAS-Chairs, March 10, 2013:

Daniel Pink on Why 'To Sell Is Human'
Whether you are an educator, an art director or a project manager, you are in sales. So argues bestselling author Daniel Pink in his new book, To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth about Moving Others. Pink recently visited the University of Pennsylvania as a guest lecturer in the Authors@Wharton series. Wharton management professor Adam M. Grant interviewed Pink while he was there to learn more about the ideas in his book, including why consumers mistrust salespeople, what the new ABCs of selling are and why questions may be the greatest selling tool.

Talking It Out: The New Conversation-centered Leadership
Every year, hundreds of thousands of new graduates enter the business world, eager to climb the corporate ladder. Their progress on the early rungs of that journey will often be determined by qualities like hard work, determination, knowledge and technical proficiency. But Alan S. Berson and Richard G. Stieglitz, authors of Leadership Conversations: Challenging High-Potential Managers to Become Great Leaders, argue that those same qualities prove less helpful at higher rungs on the ladder, and may even be one's downfall if they are not balanced by a very different set of leadership skills.

AAMC CAS-Chairs, March 6, 2013:

Thursday's issue of Nature is a special issue focused on Women in Science. Nature reports, "Science remains institutionally sexist. Despite some progress, women scientists are still paid less, promoted less frequently, win fewer grants and are more likely to leave research than similarly qualified men." The issue "takes a hard look at the gender gap - from bench to boardroom - and at what is being done to close it."

How She Leads: 24 Female M.D.s Talk About Life As The Boss

In high school, Josephine Young was the quiet valedictorian who never raised her hand in class. As a young medical manager, she was offered big responsibilities paired with skimpy pay and inadequate titles. When she said yes, she regretted it. She's a more prominent boss now, confident in her ability to stick up for herself. As she puts it: "If you are not at the table, you may be on the table."

Dr. Young is one of 24 female M.D.s whose life stories appear in "Lessons Learned: Stories From Women in Medical Management." It's a fascinating and timely book, chronicling the victories, setbacks and personal growth of an ambitious cohort. The book's overriding message: the path to success isn't a straight line. Everyone in Lessons Learned has worked through trouble at some point, becoming a stronger manager and a more resilient person by doing so.
