The Boardroom Series: What's Holding Women Back from Getting on the Board?

Women may be chipping away at the glass ceiling, but when it comes to elbowing our way into the boardroom, progress is painfully slow. In fact, the percentage of women on boards of S&P 1500 companies barely budged from 12.1 percent in 2009 to 12.6 percent today. And the average board of a Fortune 500 company in the U.S. is just 16 percent female. What gives?

AAMC has published "Diversity in Medical Education: Facts & Figures 2012," the 17th data book in the Facts & Figures Data Series. This publication provides students, medical educators and administrators, researchers, policymakers, and the general public with a compendium of detailed statistical information on race and ethnicity and gender in medical education in the United States for the 2011 academic year as well as nearly a decade's worth of trending information for select topics. The publication also includes data related to the pre-college component of the education pipeline leading to the M.D. degree and other health sciences and health professions careers.

A posting on the University of Chicago website reports, "Although some scholars have suggested that the income gap between men and women is due to women's reluctance to negotiate salaries, a new study...shows that given an invitation, women are just as willing as men to negotiate for more pay. Men, however, are more likely than women to ask for more money when there is no explicit statement in a job description that wages are negotiable, the study showed."

Gender Gaps and Canadian Research Universities

When Canada started a new program to support endowed chairs at its research universities in 2010, and no women were selected, many academics were alarmed. The government responded by commissioning a study by the Council of Canadian Academies, which issued a report last week on the state of women in the country's universities. The report found continued underrepresentation in the highest ranks of research universities, and "no single solution" to the disparities. Generally, the study found similarities between the proportion and challenges of women in Canadian research universities and those of other economically advanced nations.
