Passionate Pursuits Series: The Nine Catalysts
I have identified nine distinct catalysts that most people travel to find and follow their own heartfelt work. Think of these paths or icons for you to mull over, try on. If you ache for something of your own, this can lead you to identifying it. If you think you're stuck, you may be inspired by possibilities that will lead you to feeling fulfilled. If your family or friends are searching for their way, this might help you guide them. Of the nine, one or maybe two may beckon to you. Only cats seem to lead nine lives, but in trying to find ourselves, we recognize there are many ways to marry invention and need.

Colleges Confront a Gender Gap in Student Engagement
For decades, women have enrolled in college in greater numbers than men, and, by many measures, have outperformed them in the classroom. But in recent years, as social scientists and student-affairs offices have focused on other differences between the genders, they have documented patterns that could explain how engagement influences student development. [Note that this article comes from an issue that was devoted to issues of gender and diversity.]

The Chronicle of Higher Education, On Hiring blog, November 1, 2012:
Would You Rather Be Liked or Effective?
During the last few months I have been paying close attention to a couple of our relatively new academic leaders. They are making bold changes, saying "We aren't doing that" to people who aren't used to hearing "No," and holding some challenging actors accountable for their behavior. More fascinating than what is happening is what is not happening. While I would normally expect protesting or at least serious kvetching, all has been surprisingly quiet on the organizational-change front. To my great surprise, and I expect theirs, the new leaders actually seem to be winning people over.

Chocolate and Cheese
Taking gastronomy to the molecular level creates unprecedented flavor combos.
Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto's dish made from dark chocolate pasta bathed in a cream sauce that's been spiked with parmesan cheese is one that may not whet everyone's appetite. Chefs have long experimented with unusual food pairings, but now kitchen wizards have a new tool that can help them concoct even more daring culinary combinations. It's based on research that purports to determine the compatibility of smells, which come from the volatile, or easily evaporating, compounds in food.
