BC STUDENTS WIN NATIONAL AWARDS FOR LATIN EXAM
Congratulations to the 27 BC students who took home awards for the National Latin Exam. More than 2/3 of the BC students who took the exam this year received honors.
 
Among this year's winners is Kellen P.C. '17 who earned her second perfect score and will be honored with a special, hand-lettered certificate in addition to a gold medal. This marks the first time a BC student has earned a perfect score on the level three exam. (Only 1% of students in the nation earn a perfect score!)

STUDENT SCIENTISTS PRESENT THEIR INDEPENDENT RESEARCH
60 BC Science Research and Design students presented their work over two days at the school's Fifth Independent Research Conference. Seniors gave their final presentations, juniors presented updates on their research in four separate breakout sessions and sophomore showcased their poster presentations.  More photos.  

Topics included "The Quantum Mechanical Scanning Tunneling Microscope as Applied to Nanotechnology," "Does Prompted Handwritten Journaling Reduce Stress?" and "Let's Design a Perfect Human." Read the 2016 Science Research and Design journal

UPPER SCHOOL STUDENTS EXAMINE "PRIVILEGE" AT BC TALKS
The Upper School discussed privilege at the second annual BC Talks, which consisted of a division-wide assembly with workshops and affinity groups facilitated by students and faculty.  They discussed many privilege-related topics, including religion, race, sexuality, socioeconomic status and gender, with many participants sharing personal anecdotes.  They also talked about the history of white privilege. Learn more about the assembly or read Upper School Director Jane Moore's Opening Remarks here See more photos

ALUM UPDATES: IAN MILLER '14 AND ROBB PALLER '11
Ian Miller '14 (left) and Robb Paller '11 (right), former BC Boys Varsity Baseball teammates who now play for Harvard University and Columbia University, respectively, faced off at a doubleheader this month.  Ian was also mentioned in The Harvard Crimson after pitching a 9-1 game against Yale (with a shutout going into the final inning!) 

ALUM UPDATE: OLIVIA CUCINOTTA '14
Congrats to Olivia Cucinotta '14 who is featured in a new documentary currently premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival! "All This Panic" follows Olivia and six other girls from NYC over a three year period as they go from teenagers to adulthood. Read more.
 

THIS WEEK'S SENIOR SPEAKERS
This week's senior speakers were (left to right) Angela G., Jackson S. and Shay K.! Angela spoke about her love of the natural world and urged her fellow students to be grateful for nature, appreciate the present moment and let themselves wonder.

Jackson talked about how knows his family will always be there for him by recounting two stories from family vacations - a skiing accident and a mishap with a public toilet. Shay spoke about the socioeconomic imbalance he has observed during multiple trips to India and encouraged the student body - "a new generation of developing minds" - to work toward tolerance.
 

GREAT WEEK FOR BOYS VARSITY TENNIS
Boys' Varsity Tennis is on a roll! The team brought home two victories this week. The boys edged league powerhouses Columbia Prep and Dwight, both 3-2, in ACIS match play. Jake J. '16 won both of his singles matches, as did the doubles team of Kian S. '18 and Isaac K. '18. Congratulations Lions!!
 

PREK DELIVERS FOOD TO SOUP KITCHEN
PreK students visited CHiPS Soup Kitchen & Women's Shelter to deliver 63 cans of food and learn about the kitchen.

 
STUDENTS PITCH THEIR BUSINESSES TO "SHARK TANK"... IN SPANISH
Upper School students developed business plans for start-up companies and pitched them to the Shark Tank (Tanque Tibur�n) -- all in Spanish. After each pitch the audience asked questions and evaluated each company and presentation.

GREAT TURNOUT FOR FAMILIES OF STUDENTS OF COLOR GATHERING
Parents and guardians met and mingled at the second annual Gathering for Families of Students of Color earlier this month.
 
 
UPPER SCHOOL ART STUDENTS INSPIRED BY PLANTS
Students used flowers and plants as inspiration for their art in one of this year's Spring Intensives, Botanicals: The Art and Science of Plants.
 

5TH GRADERS STUDY TECTONICS & BUILD MODELS OF EARTH
5th grade students have been studying what shapes the surface of the Earth, focusing on plate tectonics and what occurs at plate boundaries. In a culminating activity, they were challenged to build a cross-sectional model of the Earth as a two-dimensional collage, a three-dimensional construction or an edible Earth." More photos

UPPER SCHOOL LATIN CLASS VISITS MET MUSEUM
Students visited the Roman galleries at The Metropolitan Museum of Art to research artifacts and portraits that date to the Roman Empire. This visit launched a project where students will research emperors and assume the identity of one when writing posts for a class blog. (Rumor has it Nero, Claudius, Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius and Constantine will be contributing blog posts.)

UNICEF FELLOW SPEAKS TO 6TH GRADE ABOUT WORLD WATER SUPPLY
Shehab Chowdhury, a community engagement fellow at UNICEF, spoke to sixth graders about how important water is to everyday life and how UNICEF helps provide a clean supply of it to people around the world.
