BC STUDENTS SCORE TOP 1% IN THE NATION
Congratulations to (left to right) Nathaniel D. '17, Alessandro G. '17 and Madison B. '16, who won national medals in the 2016 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, ranking in the top 1% of students nationwide! Madison and Alessandro won gold medals for a personal essay and humor piece, respectively, while Nathaniel won a silver medal, also for a humor piece. Nearly 320,000 works of art and writing were submitted to this year's competition. Winners have been invited to attend a ceremony at Carnegie Hall and participate in showcase events at Parsons School of Design at The New School and Pratt Institute. NEW YORK TIMES SAYS BC ALUM MAY BE THE NEXT BOBBY FISCHER
The New York Times published an article speculating that Berkeley Carroll alum Fabiano Caruana may be the first American in four decades (since Bobby Fischer) to win the World Chess Championship. The Times mentions BC and quotes our Lower School chess instructor, Bruce Pandolfini.
3RD GRADE VISITS CHINESE MUSIC ENSEMBLE
Third graders visited the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York, where they they heard the musicians play and even got to try out some of the instruments themselves. This music unit connects to our social studies curriculum, as students learned that these musicians, many of whom are immigrants, are able to maintain their cultural heritage through playing their ancient Chinese instruments.
BC GRANDPARENT SHARES EXPERIENCE ON HISTORY-MAKING CIVIL RIGHTS MARCH
BC grandparent Neal Goldman recently visited 5th grade humanities and discussed his involvement in the Selma to Montgomery march. Students were excited to hear about his firsthand experience as a law student who advised The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) on legal matters surrounding the historic event. Students asked thoughtful questions and made connections to their class reading of the graphic novel 'March' by John Lewis.
BC FACULTY PRESENT AT NATIONAL CONVENTION
Anne Gunning (PE chair, coordinator for girls' athletics, coach), Jeane-Marie Zarzycki (PE and aquatics teacher, coach) and Mary Aiken (aquatics teacher, coach) presented a workshop titled "Gender Inclusion in Physical Education and Athletics" at the SHAPE America National Convention & Expo in Minneapolis.

FIRST GRADERS USE "STEAM" & CREATE CHANGEMAKERS First graders read biographies in the library about people and animals who were changemakers and designed and created bottle models of them in STEAM lab. They then chose important words from the facts they've learned to create a fact flag.

4TH GRADERS BECOME EXPERTS ON ORCHESTRA INSTRUMENTS The fourth grade recently shared its orchestral instrument projects. Their assignment was to become an expert on one instrument of the orchestra and share their research with a creative project. Some made movies or models while others made a trumpet dress and a timpani cake! More photos.
