Welcome to the fourth edition of the IRI2038 monthly newsletter designed to keep you updated on this exciting futures project commissioned by IRI as part of its 75th anniversary jubilee in 2013.
What is IRI2038?

IRI2038 is a futures project exploring these questions:
- How will possible future developments, trends, and events impact the art and science of research and technology management over the next 25 years?
- How must IRI evolve to best serve its membership in these various views of the future?

IRI2038 Hosts Brown Bag Webinar
On December 7th, IRI2038 conducted an IRI Brown Bag Webinar to update participants on the project and introduce the concept of Extrapolation (or Futures) Wheels, the next major activity in the project.
All ten trends from the Futures Audit and the 23 Weak Signals from the Environmental Scan were briefly described. Participants then elected two for Futures Wheels and we proceeded to partially build one during the webinar.
A recording of the webinar presentation can be found at this link.
We are asking for volunteers to develop one or two Futures Wheels for a trend or weak signal of interest and send them to us. The three future scenarios will be based upon later impacts from these Futures Wheels. If your team is willing to do one for us, please email Ted Farrington or Christian Crews and we'll provide more information on facilitating such a session.

The RTM Retrospective
The IRI2038 Discovery Phase also included a retrospective look back 25 years to understand what folks felt were the past drivers of change as well as what issues were at the top of mind among IRI members.
The first was accomplished during the futures audit interviews as we asked each participant to tell us the drivers of change they have seen over their careers. Here is what they said:
For the second objective we reviewed and categorized RTM's featured articles back to 1988 (over 800 articles). This is still a work in progress as there remain several articles to review and we want this research to reach through 2013. Preliminary results are shown below.
