Welcome to the second edition of IRI2038 -- a monthly note to keep you updated on this exciting futures project commissioned by IRI as part of IRI's 75th Anniversary year.
What is IRI2038?
As IRI's 75th anniversary approaches in 2013, a group of IRI members are combining their efforts to lead a special research project called IRI2038 which peers into the future of innovation management. It is a futures project that will explore these questions:
- How will possible future developments, trends, and events impact the art and science of research and technology management over the next 25 years?
- How must IRI evolve to best serve its membership in these various views of the future?

IRI2038's Activities at 2012 IRI Member Summit
The IRI2038 Futures Project will host two sessions at the 2012 IRI Member Summit next month in Indianapolis, IN. These two sessions are designed to elicit the most participation and insights into how we can best model IRI's future as well as the future of the field of innovation and technology management. Speakers and topics are already lined up to help build momentum. These two sessions are detailed below:
1. Presentations and Panel Discussion on several provocative futures topics (Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2:30-5:00PM). We have confirmed the following three topics and speakers at this time:
- The Future of Computing and Computer Science - Dr. John Reynders, Vice President R&D Information, AstraZeneca.
- DIY Biotechnology and Citizen Science - Dr. Daniel Grushkin, Co-Founder, Genspace.
- The Future of Human Augmentation - Dr. Joe Dvorak, American Institute of Research.
2. Futures Wheels Workshop to explore weak signals and emerging trends (Thursday, Oct. 18, 9:30AM-noon). The IRI2038 project was designed to engage IRI's membership along the way. We've had broad participation in the Futures Audit interviews and hope many of you will come to these workshops which have important deliverables for the project.
- Four facilitated workshops will be conducted in parallel. Each workshop will consider a weak signal or emerging trend (for the purposes of Futures Wheels it is assumed the weak signal or emerging trend will become a major trend). Then participants explore possible 1st, 2nd, and 3rd order impacts of that future trend. The final results will inform three scenarios and the participatory futures game coming in the Integration phase. An example futures wheel result is shown below.
