October 30 - "The Ancestors' Breath: Dia De Muertos Celebration"
*Multigenerational Worship*
Worship Leaders: Rev. Mara Dowdall, Senior Minister; Martha Dallas, Director of Religious Education; Melinda Lee, Worship Associate
Music: Adult Choir (11)
In countries throughout Latin America, particularly Mexico where it's a national holiday, the end of October brings el "Dia de Muertos," (Day of the Dead), a time for honoring the departed through festive celebrations. Over the centuries, Dia de Muertos has blended indigenous practices with the Catholic customs of All Saints and All Souls Days. This morning, we will learn about and from this beautiful tradition, as we seek to celebrate and honor our own ancestors. Our service for all ages will involve building an altar to our ancestors; please bring with you an item representing an ancestor of yours to include (could be a photo, piece of clothing, or food or beverage they enjoyed) - you will get it back after our service concludes.

Items for Ancestor Altar this Sunday, October 30 | | by Rev. Mara
First UU friends,
During this Sunday's multigenerational service, we'll be building an Ancestor Altar at both services. Please bring with you an item representing an ancestor of yours - or your ancestry in general - to include. And please interpret this invitation as widely as possible and in a way that honors you and your particular story and situation. "Ancestors" can include loved ones recently lost or more distant relatives, and can draw from from birth or adoptive families. An "ancestor" could also be a public figure or person in your life now departed - whether "family" or not, whom you feel has guided, inspired, or informed your life in some way. Items could include a photo, clothing, a piece of art, sculpture or pottery, buttons, food or beverage they enjoyed, or other item - you will get it back after our service concludes.

Over the centuries, Dia de Muertos has blended indigenous practices with the Catholic customs of All Saints and All Souls Days, which some in our community also observe at this time of year, along with the pagan observance of Samhain. Running through these observances is a common desire to honor the departed. In Celtic traditions, it is said "veil" between the worlds is thinnest at this time of year. This Sunday, we will learn more about Dia de Muertos, as we seek to celebrate and honor our own ancestors.

First Unitarian Universalist Holiday Bazaar | | by Carol Czina
First Unitarian Universalist Holiday Bazaar is Saturday, December 3, 2016, from 9 am - 2 pm. Seeking vendors of cards, artworks, jewelry, crafts, handmade items.
We have 10 tables available to rent to UU's who would like to sell their crafts during this busy and fun community event that fills our building with holiday cheer. We will be upstairs in the Susan B Anthony Room, lots of light and windows this year! Elevator access. Set up is from 8am to 9am on Dec 3. Tables will be 6-8' long. Tables are $30.00 or 10% of your proceeds (whichever is less). We'll also have one group table for UUs who have just a few things to sell. If we don't rent all tables by November 5, we'll seek vendors from the broader Members/Friends of FUUSB community. |
Healing, Hope & Community
| |
All are invited and welcome to gather for a pre-election, non-partisan, apolitical prayer vigil on Monday, November 7 at 6 pm at the First Congregational Church of Burlington, UCC, 38 South Winooski Avenue. We are all feeling the stress and tension over this election and area clergy want to offer your community, our community, a time and a place to come together for healing and hope. No politics - just song, poem and prayer. The vigil will take place outdoors, weather permitting. This event is hosted by First Congregational Church of Burlington, UCC, with planning assistance from area clergy representing interfaith and interdenominational traditions.

Care Network Dementia Care Survey
| | by Martha Molpus
We know that dementia, a condition that affects cognitive ability, is related to age and that our population is aging. The FUUSB Care Network Ministry is beginning a Dementia Care project to help us become more aware of the realities of dementia and to explore ways we can provide support for those in our faith community who are touched by it. We need your input to best address these needs. Look for a survey in the Order of Service on November 6; this survey will also be available online. Thank you for your caring contributions.
