Million Orchid Project Buds at the Merrick House

In the next couple of years, the City Beautiful will be in its fullest bloom yet, as it begins bursting with thousands of breathtaking orchid flower blossoms. Hundreds of native orchid seedlings, as part of the Million Orchid Project, are being planted on Coral Gables City trees. Recently at the Merrick House, City crews began planting the first large batch of orchid seedlings that were propagated and grown by Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden.  Watch the video here.

New Method of Payment for Solid Waste Fees

There's a new method of payment for garbage, trash and recyclable materials for single family homes in Coral Gables. Under the new method, we will no longer be able to offer the quarterly payment option for the collection of Solid Waste fees. Like many cities are doing, we will be placing our residential solid waste bills on the November 2016 Miami-Dade County Tax Bill. We were forced to introduce this new method of payment because a number of accounts were significantly past due despite our attempts to reach compliance. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our residents that have paid their Solid Waste fees on a timely basis. Under the new method:

* Residents have the option to pre-pay the assessment directly to the City at a discounted rate if paid on or before August 15, 2016. The discounted rate is $743.00 per dwelling unit, per year (plus any past due amounts from prior years, including pending quarterly payments from the current year). Invoices and information letters have been sent to our customers.
* Payments not received by August 15, 2016 will result in the full assessment of $869.00 per dwelling unit, per year (plus any past due amounts from prior years). This charge will be included on the November 2016 Miami-Dade County Tax Bill. As with other charges listed on the Miami-Dade County Tax Bill, payments must be received by Miami-Dade County by March 31, 2017 or they will be considered past due and subject to the sale of a tax certificate.

Turn Your Parking Space into Public Spaces

The City of Coral Gables is encouraging all local businesses to participate in Park(ing) Day 2016 which is taking place on Friday, September 16. Park(ing) Day is an opportunity to temporarily turn on-street parking spaces into public places. This international event raises awareness about the importance of finding creative locations for more urban open space. Any use of the right-of-way, including the use of on-street parking spaces for
Park(ing) Day, requires a City permit. To facilitate participation on this event, the City has created a special free permit which needs to be submitted no later than Friday, September 2. Read more...

Dos and Don'ts of Political Signs

Election season is right around the corner with the Primary Election being held on August 30, and the General Election on November 8, 2016. The City of Coral Gables wants to remind citizens that there is an ordinance that regulates the use of noncommercial signs, such as political signs. The City allows three signs per property from 90 days before an election until five days after (at other times, the City allows one sign per property). These signs are not permitted to be placed on the City's right-of-way. There must be at least five feet from the sign to the front and/or side property line. If the building is less than five feet from the front property line, signs may be placed in or upon a front or side door, window, or wall. Read more...

Collecting 22,500 Pounds of Electronic Waste

More than 4,500 pounds of electronic waste was collected last week as part of the electronic recycling event organized by the City of Coral Gables, the City's Sustainability Advisory Board and STS Electronic Recycling. So far this year the City has received more than 22,500 pounds of electronic waste, such as TVs, computers, printers and cell phones. These materials will be recycled and diverted from ending up in a landfill. The City also accepted old athletic shoes that will be recycled into a material used to resurface playground fields. In addition, people donated used eyeglasses that will be given to individuals in need. The next electronic recycling will take place on Saturday, November 12, 2016, 9 a.m. to 12 noon, at City Hall's Parking Lot. For more information, call 305-460-5008. Read more...

Important Things to Know About Peacocks

Peacocks are non-native birds that have historically flourished in nearby Coconut Grove. These birds − with their stunning iridescent tails − have been recently seen in Coral Gables neighborhoods. Did you know that males are referred to as peacocks, females as peahens, and babies as peachicks? Male and female species are collectively known as peafowl and a group of peafowl is called a "party" or a "pride." Miami-Dade County has an ordinance that prohibits the taking of a peafowl, their nests or eggs, in a manner that causes injury to the birds. If you encounter a peacock in your neighborhood, there are a few important things to know about them. Read more...
