Native Orchids are Being Planted on Coral Gables Trees

Thousands of native orchid seedlings, as part of the Million Orchid Project, are being planted on Coral Gables City trees. Last week at the Merrick House, City crews began planting the first large batch of orchid seedlings that have been propagated and grown by Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden for the Million Orchid Project. In one to three years, these orchid seedlings will begin flowering and reproducing on City trees. Additional orchid plantings in Coral Gables trees will be done throughout the summer as the humid rainy season is the best time of the year to plant orchid seedlings. Read more...

Buttons on Public Right-of-Way Are Prohibited

The no-fine grace period allowing property owners to remove all concrete domes from the public right-of-way swale adjacent to any property expired yesterday. Residents have been notified since April of this year about the City's new ordinance that prohibits the use of buttons, pyramids, reflectors and other permanent encroachments in the public right-of-way without approval from the City. The City of Coral Gables has been asking property owners to fill in and level any holes or indentations that remain after these materials are removed. Consider re-using them on your private property to emphasize a walk or pathway, accent a planting area, or to ring a tree. Otherwise, please place them in your trash pile and the City will pick them up as part of the weekly trash collection service. The City will begin removing the concrete domes (buttons) the week of July 25th and may assess the cost to the property owner. Read more...

Cool Down this Summer at the Venetian Pool

Record-high temperatures don't necessarily mean you have to stay indoors by the air conditioning vent. The City of Coral Gables highly recommends taking a splash in the 820,000 gallon Venetian Pool, fed with spring water daily, which makes it refreshingly cool and perfect for this hot summer. The Venetian Pool, located at 2701 DeSoto Boulevard, is a true beauty accentuated by loggias, porticos, a signature bridge and cave-like grottos. Summer hours are Monday through Friday, from 11 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. All children must be 3 years old and at least 38 inches tall to enter. Admission is $5.50 for Coral Gables residents and $13 for non-residents ages 13 and older; $4.50 for residents and $8 for non-residents ages 3-12. To avoid the weekday field trip rush visit the pool after 3 p.m. Read more...

Spill the water
Be a Hero. Spill the Water!

Mosquitoes are more than just an everyday nuisance. They can carry dangerous diseases like West Nile and the Zika virus. As Florida's children head outside to play this summer, we need to protect them from mosquito bites by teaching them to cover their skin with long clothing and repellant and to Spill the Water! around their home. Mosquitoes can breed in as little as one teaspoon or a bottle cap of water, so eliminating sources of standing water around homes is critical to keep mosquitoes from multiplying. When kids Spill the Water!, they can be superheroes in their home and community. Read more...
