Celebrate the 4th of July at Biltmore Hotel

Come celebrate life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness this Independence Day and watch the awe-inspiring Fourth of July fireworks from the grounds of the majestic Biltmore Hotel, 1200 Anastasia Avenue. Wear your red, white and blue as the City of Coral Gables and the Biltmore Hotel are going all out to mark America's 240th birthday. Sponsors include Coral Gables Hospital, University of Miami, and several other corporate citizens. Golf course greens open to the public at 5 p.m.; Greater Miami Symphonic Band live concert starts at 7 p.m.; fireworks show begins at 9 p.m. Free parking and shuttle service is available to and from the Biltmore Hotel. Streetscape Construction Begins July 5

When the fireworks are over, all efforts go back to the transformation of Downtown Coral Gables. Roadway, sidewalk, and on-street parking reconstruction − as part of the Miracle Mile and Giralda Avenue Streetscape project − is slated to begin the week of July 5. All businesses in the area will remain open throughout construction. Please support your local businesses! Centralized valet parking is only $5 per day. City Commission to Discuss Annexation Study

A Feasibility Study to determine the community, service and financial impacts of adding the Little Gables and High Pines neighborhoods into Coral Gables will be presented at the upcoming July 26 City Commission meeting. If the City Commission directs the annexation process to move forward, they will schedule a future public hearing with mailed notice of the hearing to the affected areas. Let us know your opinion regarding this important City issue. The public is welcome to attend the City Commission meeting on July 26 and learn about the annexation initiative. Once the agenda for this meeting is published online at the City's website, the public can send electronic comments (eComments) on the issue at www.coralgables.com/ecomments. Read more...

City Hall is Closed on July 4

Coral Gables City Hall will be closed on Monday, July 4, 2016, in observance of Independence Day, but please come join us at the Biltmore Hotel for a great celebration.
 
The following facilities and services will be closed: 
 * Passport Office at 4520 Ponce de Leon
* No regular Trolley service. Beginning at 5 p.m. Trolleys will be transporting eventgoers to and from the Biltmore Hotel for the 4th of July celebration.
* War Memorial Youth Center at 405 University Drive
* Kerdyk Biltmore Tennis Center at 1200 Anastasia Avenue
* Adult Activity Center at 405 University Drive
 
The following facilities/services will remain open:
* Venetian Pool will be open from 11 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.
* Salvadore Tennis Center will be open from 7 a.m. - 9 p.m.
* Garbage, trash, and recycling services will not be affected.

CGPD Does the Running Man Challenge!

It's here: Coral Gables Police does the viral Running Man Challenge and it already has more than 300,000 views! City employees had a blast participating in the newest social media dance craze that has been spreading around the country. The Coral Gables Police Department now challenges the City of West Miami Police Department, South Miami Police Department and Pinecrest Police Department. A special "thank you" goes to the University of Miami for letting us borrow Sebastian and to Big Show for joining in on the fun! Watch it here.

July 3 is International Bag Free Day

The City of Coral Gables is going green by implementing a number of environmentally friendly initiatives such as the Green Gables fleet, electric vehicle charging stations, a Green Building Ordinance, a ban on Polystyrene products, and more. Now the City is encouraging its residents and businesses to use more sustainable alternatives to plastic bags such as paper or reusable bags. Sunday, July 3 is International Bag Free Day, a day to remind ourselves and others that every action we take, and every bag we dispose of, has long lasting effects for generations to come. City Staff Wins Tennis Facility Manager of the Year

On May 25, 2016, our own Tennis Operations Supervisor Robert Gomez was awarded the 2016 Facility Manager of the Year by the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) Florida Division, the governing body that regulates the sport. Gomez supervises the tennis programs at both the William H. Kerdyk Biltmore and Salvadore Park Tennis Centers. A tennis professional for 30 years who has been a loyal City employee for close to 10 years, Gomez was recognized for his passion and dedication for supporting the growth of tennis in Coral Gables at a professional level. Recycling Your Old Electronics, Shoes & Eyeglasses

The City of Coral Gables is hosting another recycling event on Saturday, July 16, 2016, from 9 a.m. until 12 noon, at City Hall's Parking Lot, 405 Biltmore Way. Practice the three "Rs": Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle and drop off your old electronics, worn out athletic shoes, and used eyeglasses. Traffic: FDOT is working on roadway construction of State Road 90/S.W. 8 Street from SW 39 Avenue to east of NW 34 Avenue and at the intersection of LeJeune Road. The project commenced in May and will take about five months to complete. Lane closures will occur only during non-peak hours on nights and weekends. Allow extra time to reach your destination. Obey all posted signs and speed limits.
