Coral Gables Regains AAA Credit Rating

Standard & Poor's Ratings Services raised its rating on the City of Coral Gables issuer credit rating (ICR) to AAA thanks to strong management actions. This is the highest credit rating offered by S&P. Coral Gables is the only Miami-Dade municipality with AAA bond ratings from both Moody's and Standard & Poor's. Read more...

Celebrate Earth Day by Recycling Your Old Electronics

The City of Coral Gables is encouraging everyone to practice the three R's - Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle - in celebration of Earth Day. This Saturday, April 23, 2016, from 9 a.m. until 12 noon, stop by the City Hall Parking Lot at 405 Biltmore Way to drop off your old electronics.  Any electronic item that has a plug or takes batteries is eligible to be recycled. The City is also collecting worn-out tennis/athletic/walking shoes, and unwanted eyeglasses. Read more...

New Ordinance Prohibits Buttons on Public Right-of-Way

The City of Coral Gables has passed a new ordinance that prohibits buttons, pyramids, reflectors and other permanent encroachments in the public right-of-way without approval from the City. Residents must remove all buttons, pyramids, reflectors and other encroachments from the public right-of-way swale adjacent to your property by July 12, 2016. If these encroachments are not removed within 90 days, the City will remove the items and may assess the cost to the property owner. Read more...

City Offers New Mobile Permit Service

A new Mobile Permit Service is being offered to residents who may need special assistance in obtaining permits for small home improvement projects with particular focus on seniors and residents with limited mobility. Residents can now contact a city representative to meet at their home in order to obtain this permit. Read more...

Don't Use Expanded Polystyrene (Styrofoam) In Coral Gables

The City of Coral Gables is going green in many ways and is asking you to stop using expanded polystyrene, commonly referred to as Styrofoam. This petroleum byproduct takes hundreds to thousands of years to degrade and is not readily recyclable. A new city ordinance now prohibits City vendors, contractors and organizations who receive a City Special Event Permit from using expanded polystyrene. To lead by example, the City of Coral Gables has stopped purchasing items that are made of Styrofoam. Code violation fines will be issued beginning on January 1, 2017. Read more...

Arbor Day Celebration Honors Frank M. Button

Frank M. Button, the original landscape architect of Coral Gables, will be honored at the upcoming Arbor Day Celebration taking place on Friday, April 29, 2016, 10 a.m. at Alhambra Circle and Majorca Avenue intersection. The City of Coral Gables has also been named a 2015 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. City Donates Fire Truck to La Antigua, Guatemala

The City of Coral Gables recently donated one of its retired fire trucks to its Sister City of La Antigua, Guatemala. The fire truck departed to its destination from Homestead Air Reserve Base on April 2nd. Watch the video to learn more about this effort.

New Sculpture To Be Installed At Lugo & Red Road Traffic Circle

A new sculpture by internationally renowned artist Lugufelo will be installed at the traffic circle of Lugo Avenue and Red Road. The sculpture "Spinnaker," an original work by Lugufelo, will be installed by the end of the month. The Venezuelan artist has won many awards nationally and has similar artwork installations in Venezuela, Mexico, Norway, and across the United States.

Florida Historical Society Recognizes Book about Merrick

The Florida Historical Society has awarded the book "George Merrick, Son of the South Wind: Visionary Creator of Coral Gables" the Charlton Tebeau Award for a general interest book on a Florida history topic. The award will be presented to author Arva Moore Parks as part of the Florida Historical Society's annual meeting being held next month in Orlando. Tebeau was a prominent American historian of Florida and a professor at the University of Miami.
 
"Dr. T. was my mentor and the reason why I went to graduate school and became a Florida historian," said Arva Moore Parks.

Free Monthly Health Screenings

Coral Gables Hospital is offering free health screenings the first Thursday of every month from 8 a.m. until 12 noon in the hospital lobby at 3100 Douglas Road. Coral Gables residents can call 305-441-6877 to register.
 
Walk-ins are also welcomed. Screenings include blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol. Read more....
