City to Issue Bonds to Finance Streetscape Project
The City of Coral Gables, through the Sunshine State Governmental Financing Commission, is issuing approximately $19,800,000 in Capital Improvement Revenue Bonds. The purpose of these bonds is to finance improvements for the City's Miracle Mile and Giralda Avenue Streetscape Project. The City expects the issue to be offered on or about April 12, 2016. Meet the City's New Assistant City Manager
Coral Gables City Manager Cathy Swanson-Rivenbark has appointed Peter J. Iglesias as Assistant City Manager for Operations and Infrastructure. Mr. Iglesias will join the City's executive leadership team on April 25. A respected and recognized professional with more than 35 years of complex engineering and construction experience in both the private and public sectors, Mr. Iglesias returns to the City of Coral Gables where he was previously in charge of the Structural Division. In his new capacity, Mr. Iglesias will oversee Public Works, Development Services, Parking, Historical Resources and Cultural Arts, Economic Development and Community Recreation. Read more...

Sea Level Rise Discussion Continues April 13
The third and last lecture of the Sea Level Rise Discussion series will take place on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, from 6-7 p.m. at the Coral Gables Museum, 285 Aragon Avenue. The lecture will focus on Climate Responsive Design of Resistant Built Infrastructure. The series is hosted by Commissioner Pat Keon in partnership with Florida International University's Sea Level Rise Solutions Center. FIU graduate students will bridge knowledge and expertise from a range of disciplines including Architecture and the Arts, Engineering and Computer Sciences, Biology, Law, and Public Health, to design resilient and sustainable infrastructure for the future. The studio will culminate in a showcase of student work, with information and analyses for each adaptation and mitigation solution. Read more...

Venetian Pool Wins Platinum International Aquatic Safety Award
For the third year in a row, the Venetian Pool lifeguard staff has been awarded the Platinum International Aquatic Safety Award. Earning this award demonstrates that the Venetian Pool exceeds industry standards in risk management and epitomizes aquatic safety excellence. Last summer, the pool's lifeguards carried out 94 successful rescues, preventing life threatening situations. The safety award was presented by Jeff Ellis & Associates (E&A), an international aquatic safety and risk management consultant. Only the top 10 percent of E&A clients in the world receive a Platinum International Aquatic Safety Award each year.

 National Crime Victims' Rights Week The City of Coral Gables presented a proclamation declaring April 10-16, 2016 as National Crime Victims' Right Week. Under the theme of "Serving Victims. Building Trust. Restoring Hope," this campaign joins the U.S. Department of Justice in honoring victims and survivors in their path to recovery in order to strengthen the community. The Coral Gables Police Department has a specialized Victim/Witness Unit serving the victims of crimes in a variety of ways including crisis intervention, phone consultation, safety planning, community agency referrals, and criminal justice support system, among others. The City of Coral Gables is accepting applications for the Donald R. Hopkins & William A. Cooper Scholarship until Sunday, May 1, 2016. The Scholarship Program was established in 1989 by the City of Coral Gables to help student-residents complete their educational and career goals. Before Flying a Drone Near MIA ....
The City of Coral Gables is only a few minutes away from Miami International Airport. While there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy in South Florida's beautiful weather this time of year, flying a drone near an airport is not one of them. Many users of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), commonly referred to as drones, are not aware that these devices are considered to be aircraft by government agencies. Therefore, certain restrictions apply. The Miami-Dade Aviation Department wants Coral Gables residents be aware of the regulations before flying a drone in Miami-Dade County. Read more...
