Vintage Coral Gables

The Douglas Entrance to the city, at Douglas Road (named for John Douglas, who helped build the road) and Southwest Eighth Street, was one of the Denman Fink's masterpieces of design. In concert with architects Walter deGarmo and Phineast Paist, it was originally called Puerta del Sol, or Gate of the Sun. Opened on May 21, 1927, at a cost of more than $1 million, the original plans called for, in addition to the entryway and the tower, two wings of galleries, shops, and apartments.
