Last month, the Coral Gables City Commission approved text amendments to a City ordinance in order to promote public peace in residential areas. Under the "Parades and Public Assemblies" City Code Chapter 62, the new Section 62-202 provides that it is unlawful for any person(s) to picket, protest, or conduct any picketing or protesting activity within a buffer area of 50 feet from the property line of any dwelling unit that is located in a Coral Gables residential neighborhood. A Greener City: 700 New Trees Planted

Approximately 700 trees have already been planted in residential areas throughout the City of Coral Gables, as part of the City's Tree Succession Program which began last summer. Another 480 locations have been identified and staked, completing a third of the approximately 3,000 trees which were promised as part of this citywide project. The planting of the new trees is expected to last until summer of 2016. The trees are being planted in five zones, moving from north to south, and west to east. The coconut palm removals, relocations, and planting will be conducted separately from the tree planting zones. The City's contractor, SMF Services, is responsible for the planting of the trees and palms, as well as for the watering and maintenance of the trees, a year after they are planted. Protect Yourself Against Mosquito Bites

The Florida Department of Health is monitoring travel-associated cases of Zika virus, a mosquito-borne illness. The most common symptoms of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting from several days to a week. There have been no locally-acquired cases. However, avoiding mosquito bites is the best way to prevent all mosquito-borne disease, and there are simple steps to reduce the chance of being bitten. Practice "drain and cover" at home, but also when you're traveling, particularly to areas such as the Caribbean, Central America and South America. Read more...

Vintage Coral Gables
Here's a tidbit about vintage Coral Gables, commemorating the 100th Wedding Anniversary of George and Eunice Merrick.

On February 5, 1916, George Merrick married Eunice Isabella Peacock, seen in the picture. Eunice Peacock Merrick's family was among the first settlers of Coconut Grove, where they ran the Peacock Inn. She was born in 1895. After marrying George Merrick in 1916, she lived in Coral Gables until her death in 1989. She was the founder of the Coral Gables Garden Club in 1924 and is credited with naming many of the city's streets.

In 1920, The Four Seasons published George's book of poetry "Song of the Wind on a Southern Shore," where he included the following poem dedicated to his lovely wife.

Valentine to an Island Love
To Eunice
Brown Eyes of fair Hispania;
Black hair of Indie Isle;
Inheriting of old Britannia
Not your languorous Latin smile,
But your stubborn willful spirit,
Your spunky saucy style.

Sweet lips - of kisses Elysian,
More fragrant than "Parfume Vantine."
Chic grace - of essence Parisian;
Hot temper that most matches mine;
True heart; filled with love that is precious:
Why you are my Valentine!
