Public Artworks to be Installed on Segovia Circles

Two sculptures - which celebrate Coral Gables' roots as a Garden City - will soon grace the Segovia Traffic Circles at Coral Way and Biltmore Way in 2016. The sculptures are taken in part from the passiflora (passion flower) species. Scaled to a gigantic size, the work references satellites, antennas, and mechanical robotic floral objects. They were designed by renowned New York artist Alice Aycock, who was chosen by the City Commission to create the first major public artworks since Coral Gables founder George Merrick's day.  Read more...

Don't place trash piles too close to swale trees.
Be The Guardians of our Swale Trees

Help us be guardians of our swale trees! Please don't place trash piles too close to trees that are planted in the grass swale area along our City trees, as pictured. The tree trunks and roots might accidentally get damaged by the truck cranes during trash collection days. If you share a trash pile in your neighborhood where you deposit yard waste every week, please ensure these trash piles are far away from any trees planted on the grass swale. This way, you will help us protect our public trees from being damaged, safeguarding the green canopy of Coral Gables. If you need assistance identifying a proper location for your trash pile, please use the City app to make a service request or contact Robert Fernandez at 305-460-5184.

Vintage Coral Gables
Here's a tidbit about Vintage Coral Gables:

In November 1924, Merrick announced the Crafts Section, and idealistic venture that may have been the genesis of the themed villages that came a year later. Remembering his fascination with John Ruskin and his veneration of artisans and craftsmen, Merrick planned a utopian village based on Ruskin's discipline William Morris' Arts and Crafts movement in Hammersmith, England. "The Crafts Section," Merrick's advertisements proclaimed, "will attract wide-spread attention because of its appeal to the artistic sense."

Typical of Merrick, who always spoke of "beauty and utility," the Crafts Section, located just south of the Business Section, also had a practical side. Here, artisans and craftsmen would create furniture, rugs, iron work and tile to be used in Coral Gables homes and businesses. Other trades as contractors, electricians, photographers and printers would also have offices there. The Crafts Section included hundreds of homes for the artisans and artists, and for followers of Ruskin's philosophy. He also built the San Sebastian Apartments where workers had first choice to rent one of the 70 units.

The centerpiece of the Crafts Section was to be the monumental Permanent Exposition Hall where artists and craftsmen could display their wares. It would dominate an elliptical park that divided the north bound and south bound lanes of Ponce de Leon Boulevard between Sevilla and Palermo. Nearby, on the intersection of Anastasia, Santander and Ponce de Leon Boulevard, Merrick planned a Community Market reminiscent of the markets in Spain.

Although the Crafts Section was never completed, several notable buildings were constructed. When architect H. George Fink built his studio on Ponce de Leon Boulevard in 1925, it was highlighted as an important addition to the Crafts Section. One of the most beloved remaining buildings in the Crafts Section, it continues to reflect the best of early Coral Gables visionary architecture.
