Vintage Coral Gables
|
Here's a tidbit about our Vintage Coral Gables:
In 1924 George Merrick began construction of a trolley line that would operate north on Ponce from Coral Way to Flagler Street, and east on Flagler Street to 21st Avenue where it would connect to the Miami streetcar line and reach downtown Miami. Merrick purchased five trolleys which were painted in bright coral pink, charging a fare of 10 cents to encourage ridership. The 1926 hurricane damaged the trolley system but the Coral Gables Trolley continued to operate with two main lines. The Birney-type trolleys seated about 32 passengers and were scheduled to run every 40 minutes throughout the day. Unfortunately, the hurricane of November 4, 1935 destroyed the Trolley's overhead wire, along with numerous trolley poles and feeder cables. The City of Coral Gables, which was struggling financially, could not afford to rebuild the system.
The Trolley system returned to Coral Gables in 2003 as a free service. It continues to operate as a successful transportation alternative that services more than 5,000 passengers per day.
