If you lose track of time shopping Downtown this holiday season and forget to feed the meter, don't worry about getting a parking ticket. From December 5 through December 25, parking attendants will only place on your windshield a Holiday Courtesy Notice if your meter expires. This gives you a one-hour extension from the time the meter expired. These courtesy notices apply only to the Downtown district from Andalusia Avenue to Giralda Avenue and from Douglas Road to LeJeune Road. For more information, contact the Parking Department at 305-460-5541.

Cost of Homeowner Renovation Permits is Reduced
Good news if you're doing a home renovation that is less than $500 in value: The City of Coral Gables has reduced the cost of homeowners' renovations to a flat fee of $25. This is a 90 percent reduction of the previous fee typically charged for this type of home renovation.
The previous permit fees were a substantial financial burden considering the minor nature and costs of routine maintenance which was discouraging homeowners from seeking permits. Read more.

City Employees Collect Food To Help 300 Families
A truck full of canned goods and dry foods collected by Coral Gables City Employees over the past two months is going to help a very good cause. The generous food donations are going to the Grove Outreach, a mission of St. Hugh Catholic Church which feeds families in need every Saturday of the year. These arrangements were coordinated through the Coral Gables Community Foundation. "Thanks to the good hearts of your employees, we will be able to feed about 300 families in the West Grove, MacFarlane Homestead and Golden Gates neighborhoods," said Lazaro Villamil, Director of Operations of St. Hugh Catholich Church. The donations were part of the Golden Can Award competition, a challenge made by City Manager Cathy Swanson-Rivenbark to all City employees to collect as many cans as possible to help others during the holidays. The winning City departments which collected the most number of cans will enjoy a homemade holiday breakfast, courtesy of the City leader.

Vintage Coral Gables
|
Here's a tidbit about our Vintage Coral Gables.
In additional to being a planner, George Merrick was also a born salesman and had an instinct for marketing. He filled Miami papers with daily full-page advertisements that he wrote himself. Signs pointing the way to Coral Gables and proclaiming "Follow the Golden Galleon" appeared on trees and signposts. Actors in Spanish pantaloons directed the way. Merrick's promotional campaign worked. Five thousand people showed up in Coral Gables on November 28, 1921, the first day of sales. Coral Gables, South Florida's first, and for many years, only planned community had arrived. Denman Fink designed the signposts that directed people west to the new community of Coral Gables.
