University of Miami
Vintage Coral Gables
Here's a tidbit about our Vintage Coral Gables. Part 2 of 2 about the history of the University of Miami:

On September 12, 1926, The Miami Daily News reported that work on the Anastasia Building was being rushed to completion and it would be ready for the October 15 debut.  Only five days later, however, the opening and indeed the University's very survival were in doubt. High winds picked up on the evening of September 17.  By midnight, startled Miamians awakened to the howl of a powerful hurricane striking like an arrow to a bull's eye. Hurricanes did not have names in 1926, but after this one blew through town, "Killer" seemed to fit nicely.  One hundred and twenty-five prospective University of Miami students, true pioneers, showed up that morning of October 15 to give birth to an embryonic university. The first student to register was Francis Houghtaling, a Miami native and son of a dairy farmer. The new "Cardboard College," as it was affectionately called because it had thin partitions, had but one claim to fame. Despite a hurricane, the dust and bust of the boom and an army of naysayers, it had actually opened on schedule.
At the first assembly, Bowman Ashe, who at this time was still the University's executive secretary, reminded the students that they would be the ones who would create tradition. "We don't have any school songs," he noted. "Somebody has to get busy and write some." Within two days, the Miami Riviera reported that students Dale Clark and Ted Kennedy had come up with the "Spirit of Miami U."
Other enduring traditions were fast coming. On October 23, enthusiastic football fans from all over Miami showed up to cheer the rag-tag, two-week-old UM team as it faced its first opponent, Rollins College freshmen, in the "temporary" Coral Gables Stadium. But before the first game was over, the team had a name, the "Hurricanes," and a winning attitude. In November, another important tradition was born with the creation of the Iron Arrow Honor Society led by Dr. Ashe and the "Founding Nine." (Information courtesy of Arva Moore Parks).
