The Issuer Rating upgrade to Aaa reflects the city's initiative to build up financial reserves and conservatively manage operations, and incorporates the substantial and rebounding tax base, wealthy socioeconomic profile, strong financial position, low debt burden, and moderate pension liability. Here's a tidbit about our Vintage Coral Gables, Part 1 of 2 about the history of the University of Miami:
On December 21, 1921, just one month after he sold the first lots in his Coral Gables subdivision, George Merrick announced that "Coral Gables -Miami's Master Suburb- is aiming also to become Miami's University Suburb." The idea of building a university in Miami was not new. "The Great Commoner," three-time Democratic Party presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan, had proposed such an idea five years earlier. His vision was to build a great Pan American University that would take advantage of South Florida's climate and geography. In response, civic leaders formed several committees to explore the idea, but nothing concrete came of his proposal until 1925. Even though Merrick kept a super-human schedule, he found time to stay in close touch with the latest committee led by retired banker Frederic Zeigen and attorney William W. Walsh. Merrick offered 160 acres in his new Riviera Section of Coral Gables and $5 million if matched by another $5 million raised in the community. On January 16, 1926, the beautiful Miami-Biltmore Hotel opened. Just three weeks later, Merrick stood with other dignitaries to lay the cornerstone of the Solomon G. Merrick Administration Building. The reinforced concrete frame of the Merrick Administration Building was up before the cold truth of the end of the Boom began to sink in. One bright moment occurred in March when the regents hired Pennsylvanian Bowman Foster Ashe as executive secretary. In June, realizing that the Merrick Building could not be completed by the projected October 15 registration, the Regents decided to shift their efforts toward completing the half-finished Anastasia Hotel, a Coral Gables Corporation project that was experiencing financial problems of its own. As they announced this change in plans, they were quick to add that the Merrick Building would be completed in time for the opening of the second semester. Financial problems grew worse in July, however, and all work stopped on the Merrick Building.
