Vintage Coral Gables
The Venetian Pool, at the time of its opening, was declared by the media as the "brightest jewel in all of the distinctive architecture which is Coral Gables." Capitalizing on its ambiance, Merrick made the pool his premiere sales emporium. The Venetian Pool drew thousands of people to Coral Gables. Adding to the lure, Merrick brought in Jan Garber and Paul Whiteman and their orchestras to entertain. He hired impresario Alexander Ott to run water shows, beauty pageants, and sporting events. The response was so great that Merrick had to build grandstands to accommodate the visitors. Each afternoon, beginning in January 1926, three-time Democratic presidential candidate, William Jennings Bryan (for a reported $100,000 fee), told throngs of adoring people about the value of investing in South Florida real estate.
