Vintage Coral Gables

Have you noticed that most Coral Gables streets have Spanish names? The fact is that there are also English, Italian and Portuguese names, plus a couple of streets named after saints. The history of these street names is very rich and interesting. Here's a tidbit about our Vintage Coral Gables:

Bird Road was named for the Bird family of Coconut Grove. The original road led from Tiger Tail to Coconut Grove. There was a school from across the street from the Bird's home. Eunice Merrick, wife of George, attended this school. Bird Road was dedicated as a memorial to Frank Button, the original landscaper for Coral Gables, who was killed while he was planting trees that line the roadway. He fell in a ditch and was run over by a bulldozer. Would you like to receive more tidbits about Vintage Coral Gables? Email us at [email protected].
