Happy Birthday Coral Gables
On April 29, Coral Gables celebrates its 90th anniversary. On that day in 1925, the City's original charter was approved by the Florida Legislature. Coral Gables is marking that official milestone with a year-long celebration that kicks off on Tuesday, April 28, at 11 a.m. at the City Commission meeting, which will include a proclamation and a cake replica of City Hall. Mayor, Commissioners Sworn In
The three winners in last Tuesday's 2015 General Biennial Election were sworn in Friday during a ceremony in the Commission Chambers packed with family and friends. Sworn in were incumbent Mayor Jim Cason, who was reelected to a third two-year term for Group I; incumbent Commissioner Frank Quesada, who was re-elected after winning a second four-year term for Group IV and named Vice Mayor, and challenger Jeannett Slesnick, was elected Commissioner for Group V. Streetscape Project Open House
Gables residents had a sneak peek at the Miracle Mile Streetscape Project this past Friday. Several hundred people stopped in to see proposed design concepts, to share their comments -- and to hear from streetscape design firm representatives from Cooper, Robertson & Partners and city staff who delivered a brief presentation. A special City Commission meeting regarding the Miracle Mile & Giralda Streetscape Project will take place Friday, April 24, at 1 p.m. at City Hall.
School Board to End Controlled Choice in Coral Gables
On April 16, the Miami-Dade County School Board approved on first reading a new policy that would end Controlled Choice and establish attendance boundaries for Coral Gables Preparatory Academy, G.W. Carver Elementary and Sunset Elementary. For more on the decision, click here.

Pedestrian Overpass Groundbreaking
Coral Gables residents are invited to the Groundbreaking Ceremony of the Pedestrian Overpass at University Metrorail Station Thursday, April 23 at 10 a.m. at 5400 Ponce De Leon Blvd. When completed, the overpass will make it easier - and, most importantly, safer - for an estimated 1,300 pedestrians and bicyclists, including many students, to cross US 1 every day.

University of Miami Chooses New President
Dr. Julio Frenk, 61, previously the dean of faculty at Harvard's School of Public Health and Mexico's former minister of health, will replace outgoing President Donna Shalala. Happy Earth Day!
Today, Wednesday April 22, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. celebrate Earth Day by recycling your "electronic waste" at Merrick Park across from City Hall, 400 Biltmore Way. For more information, click here. It's the second chance this month to get rid of old computers, monitors, copiers, cameras, phones and other electronic components. On April 12, the popular Sundays on the Porch series accepted unwanted electronic components and appliances, as part of its Eco-Fair in honor of Mother Earth. Watch coverage of the event here. Jazz Era Returns to the Historic Biltmore
