Worst Winter Storms of the Last 50 Years
Spring is almost here (thank goodness!!) and we have all been dealing with worse than usual weather conditions. According to my smartphone, the temperature in myrtle Beach, SC has dropped nearly 25 degrees since noon today! But just think...it could be worse... Here is a brief description of some of the worst winter storms over the last 50 years:
- Midwest Blizzard of 1967-Shortley after a few days of 60 degree weather and tornado watches, the temperature dropped and a blizzard ravaged the mid west with winds nearing 50 MPH and dumping up to 2ft of snow in some areas. The storm attributed to 76 deaths, including 26 in Chicago alone.
- New York City Blizzard of 2006-It wasn't so much that it snowed and the wind blew, but where the snow fell and the wind blew! Although not technically "blizzard" conditions (minimum 35mph winds) the New York City recorded its highest snowfall, 26.9 inches and the city was virtually crippled.
- Super Bowl Blizzard, 1975-It started with 45 tornadoes that resulted in 12 deaths and 377 injured people. Then the storm hit the arctic winds of the north and the snow began. In all, 100,000 farm animals 58 people were lost.
- Buffalo Blizzard of 1977-A lot of people think of KISS when they hear 1977. But if you're from Buffalo, then you might remember 1977 as the year that a record 199.4" of snow fell. This particular blizzard packed winds on average of 45mph with 75mph gusts. The effects of the storm caused 29 deaths.
- New England Blizzard of 1978-The worst part about this storm was when it hit. The day started out fine and everyone headed to work and school without a care. Then it started...in the afternoon...at high tide, dumping up to 4" per hour and the winds causing major coastal flooding and leaving hundreds of thousands stranded. Boston recorded 27.1", but the snowfall was anywhere from 1-3 feet. The death toll in MA and RI was over 100, mostly due to frostbite. I was 3 years old, all I remember was looking out the window and seeing the snow at the level of the window sill, our back door packed shut, jugs of milk set outside in the snow when we lost power, and building really cool snow forts and tunnels with my brother!
- Snowmadgeddon 2010-Not so distant memories of back-to-back record breaking snowfall in 2010 across the mid-Atlantic come rushing back. Washington's Dulles airport reported 32.4". When all was said and done nearly 70% of the country was covered in snow after these two storms hit.
- The Storm of the Century 1993-And then, yeah, that happened! My memories of this one are much clearer and not as fond! Snowed in on my 18th birthday...IN MARCH!! The massiveness of
this storm is unrivaled, spanning 26 states and affecting 1/2 of the U.S. population. Snowfall ranged from 4" in Atlanta, GA, up to 50" in the Catskills and Appalachian mountains. Sustained winds were 70-100mph, equivalent to a category 3 hurricane. Temperatures reached -12 degrees in Burlington, VT and got as low as 31 degrees in Daytona Beach, FL. Damage was estimated at $6.6 billion and 310 lives were lost due to the effects of the storm.

So, just something to ponder, for now, that it could be worse! Now THINK SPRING!!!
