reflection section
can you come out and play?

This was the scene last Wednesday outside my office window as our two younger kids played wiffle ball with their 8-year-old cousin. Next time I looked, hubby had joined in the fun. I could hear their excited cries, the crack of the plastic bat and laughter. It distracted me from work since it elicited such happy sounds and a pleasant view on a beautiful afternoon. (Whose 19- and 24-year-old kids still go out to play anymore!?!)

I didn't sit here long before I put the computer to sleep and ran outside in my flipflops to join them. The letters and invoices I needed to mail out would get done another time, the book marketing could wait, and the Little Italy newsletter would get written. How could I not go outside to play?

Remember as we were growing up, walking over to our friends' houses, knocking on each other's doors to ask, "Can you come out and play?"

Playtime is vital for our emotional well being and our souls. It is splendid for our balance and peace of mind. Play can happen in many variations. What's your favorite type of playtime? Perhaps biking, yoga, walking, gardening, pool volleyball? Maybe wiffle ball, golfing, cornhole, softball, attending a sports event or concert? Is it bar hopping, hugging, wrestling, joking, swimming, hanging with friends?

Whatever definition you have for play - go do it. Make it an important part of your week. Your TO-DO list can wait. The obligations and tasks will be there for later.

Go play.

"the case of the missing N"

"I am so sorry that happened. If it makes you feel better, I've always had four or five proofreaders when writing and editing and it helped relieve my anxiety. One read everything backward as mistakes were more obvious to the brain that tends to fill in what it believes is missing. But a very wise Jesuit once told me that each Persian carpet has a dropped stitch because only Allah is perfect. Enjoy this beautiful day on the trail, if possible!!"

"You have written a book! Actually, more than one ... but you've completed what you set out to do! Kudos for that alone. I have spent WAY too many days saying 'one of these days.' I have more projects in progress than progress on projects! Yes, the missing 'n' hurts but you should be soooo proud. I'm sure it's a wonderful book with or without the n. Focus on all the wonderful 'good' you accomplish each and every day ... from the books, to the snippets, to your activities in Little Italy. You are one remarkable woma !! See anything missing???"

"Reminds me of my days at Martin Marietta working in publications for the VP and President of Business Development. We worked 2 months on a 100-page presentation. Night before the presentation, someone noticed that the header (on EVERY PAGE, and there since day one) read Marietta Marietta instead of
Martin Marietta! Of course it was after hundreds of copies were printed!
Glad the error was caught, but the Design and Printing Department were there overnight fixing and reprinting and rebinding the presentation. Will never forget that experience! Actually made me way more detail oriented! Feel your pain."
