seeking the stamp of approval

In life, we can be approved for bank loans, credit cards, car purchases and lines of credit. We can receive "stamps of approval" or be "pre-approved." There is even that cute little "seal of approval."

After arriving home from the hair salon last week with pink hair, my daughter expressed her dislike. Hubby wasn't nuts about it either. ("What were you actually going for?" he asked.) Some friends didn't like it; others loved it. No matter - I didn't ask them. I didn't ask anyone if I could dye my hair pink.

I do stuff to satisfy my preferences and my simple pleasures, not to please or seek a stamp of approval from others. As long as I am not hurting anyone, I do what I want to do. Friends can roll their eyes at my out-of-ordinary choices of hair styles, shoes, jewelry and clothes. ("Are you really going to buy that?" i.e., those all-white crocodile cowboy boots in Cancun.) Think that stops me from a) buying it, b) wearing it? or c) coloring my hair pink? Nah.

Do you need - and seek - approval from people before you do something, buy something, take a job, start something, act on something, wear something, go someplace, marry someone or dye your hair a funky color?

Isn't approval really only someone's opinion? Shouldn't we possess the confidence to seek approval from only ourselves? What is it we need to hear ... permission?

"It's okay."
"Do it."
"We approve."
"Go right ahead."

Why can't those words of support come from within? What if you ask for someone's approval and it's not the answer you'd prefer to hear? Do you go it alone and move forward on your idea anyhow? I do.

Who do we allow to 'stamp' us with their approval? And why do we need it? Who are they that they get to have a say-so in our stuff?

Let's be more like the presidential candidates who approve their own messages on political commercials. I'll start ... This is Suzanne of SNIPPETS Inspiration and I approve this message written by a girl with pink hair.

"I do the same thing as 'Phyllis in MD' does. I have a folder on my email with saved SNIPPETS. I change the subject line to briefly reflect the message or thought for that day.  If I need a HUG, I'll go to that snippet. If I need to read 'sack the sorry' again for reinforcement, I'll go to that snippet, or if I want to read the bonus snippet 'potato chip story' again, I can do so easily. Thank you Suzanne."

snippeteers share thoughts on last week's
Friday the 13th issue
:

"Suzanne and Snippeteers: I have never been a person who was superstitious. This is something that was ingrained in me as a child. I think you have said it very well in your little snippet yesterday."
~ Jaclyn

"Hurray for the 13th. I was born on Friday the 13th along with my twin; it was also our grandmother's birthday. And my grandmother-in-law was born on the 13th as well. I have always considered it a lucky day and thank you for sharing that idea! Have a terrific Friday the 13th."
~ Betty M. S. in Phoenix MD

"Hi Suzanne! Happy day! I loved this one - choose happy and there will almost always be ways to make it so! I have begun to count on your blog for such wisdom. Thanks for doing it!"
~ XO, Vivian C in NY

"Hi Suzanne, Friday the 13th, a full moon, dreary and rainy for the umpteenth day - so I am wearing bright pink! I decided I could do nothing about the date, the moon and the weather - but I can certainly brighten up my appearance and my classroom - and hopefully, my attitude! And as a further bright spot - it is my beautiful granddaughter's 9th birthday and today she sang the responsorial psalm at the school Mass - quite a feat in front of all those people! She, like all my grandchildren, brightens my day and brings such joy to my heart. So this Friday the 13th is a good one for us!"
~ Karen R in MD

"Thanks for the extra facts about the number 13. I was born on the 13th (not on a Friday) and never considered myself to be a 'lucky' person, but yet I am in many ways and I am still here on Earth, which is lucky in itself.
Happy Friday the 13th!"
~ Phyllis I in MD

"Hello Suzanne, Friday the thirteenth is very lucky indeed. We were married on Friday, July 13, 1984. It was a wild and crazy reception and has been ever since. Attached is my favorite wedding photo along with one from the reception - that's the groom singing 'I got my mojo workin' with the band while his brother plays harmonica! Love your SNIPPETS."
