understanding of the heart

While attending Catholic church in my grandparents' town of Luras, Sardinia, Italy, of course, the Masses are said in Italian. Although I am able to speak basic Italian and (mostly) follow and converse with my many cousins over there, to understand an entire liturgy in Italian is challenging since they speak much too rapidly for me to keep up. Thankfully, printed liturgies are available from which I read aloud with the congregation, since I am able to read and write Italian.

Faith is an important component in my life. So although my brain is not understanding every word in those Masses in that tiny village on the beautiful island of Sardinia, it doesn't matter. I still feel faithful, still feel the love of God and the essence of worship. I feel the joy in being present in that special and beautiful ancient stone church where my grandparents and great-grandparents were married and prayed through the family's trials and tribulations. As well, I feel peaceful listening to the Italian Masses, whether I understand them or not; since to my ears there is no language more beautiful than Italiana ... la lingua bella.

Sometimes our brains may not comprehend a situation, yet it doesn't mean we don't still feel it, appreciate it and embrace it. Instead of using our heads, we allow our hearts, emotions and souls to take over - and we understand it perfectly.

thoughts on last issue:
 take it forward

"I think we load huge amounts of pressure on ourselves to meet certain standards that may not be applicable to us. We want long straight hair when we have curly hair; thinner, taller, blonder, etc. We want what we do not have or cannot do, instead of embracing and making do with the great qualities we have and are able to do. I became more comfortable with myself as I aged; once I hit 50 and now on the crest of 60, I find I have accepted things about myself that are just NOT going to change and have learned to work with them. I am not able to wash my car, clean the entire house and grocery shop all in one day now like when I was younger, and that is okay. I have also learned that there is always tomorrow and if that does not come, the chores were meant for someone else or not to be done at all. I am trying to smell the roses every day. I just wish I had learned to incorporate this thinking more often when my Steve was alive. Life is a lesson. We need to pay more attention to it."

"Whenever I hear someone say something like 'I will NEVER dance or wear makeup as they do,' I always reply the same thing, 'Not with THAT attitude!' You could compete on Dancing with the Stars with the best of them if you put your mind to it. (And were invited.)"
