empowerment & inspiration ... all for you

take it forward

I watched Jamie, our wonderful beach yoga instructor, practically put her nose on the sand as she led us in a forward fold stretch.

Although yoga has increased my flexibility dramatically over the last few years, the forward fold is a challenge. I don't fold very forward at all. I looked around the class of 16 yogis to see who else was or wasn't folded as forward as Jamie.

Then Jamie said, "Wherever you are, it's perfect." And I reminded myself not to compare. "I see 16 of you and 16 different poses," she said, "and that's okay. You are each unique and each where you're supposed to be."

It's all too easy to play the comparison game, isn't it? He has this and she has that and I want it ... and she always looks great and he's so funny ... and she lost weight and I didn't. She can do this and I can't, and I will NEVER dance as they do or wear such perfect makeup as they do on Dancing With the Stars.

But wise Jamie is right - we are perfectly imperfect and we are in the pose meant for us. And THAT is something I can take forward.

"Hi Suzanne, When I passed the service manager at work yesterday, he looked at me and said, "You are always smiling, are you really that happy?" His question made me think. Yes, I truly am that happy. I work for kind and caring people, I have a wonderful family and lots of people that love me. My life is not perfect, although I don't really know what the definition of perfect is. I am dealing with lots of 'stuff' right now, but as a wise friend once said, 'You WILL get through it. You always do.' I choose to get through life's challenges with a smile on my face. While I know I will not be able to be happy all of the time, I have so much to be thankful for. Thanks for your weekly dose of inspiration!"

"I LOVE IT. I try very hard to be happy and to have fun when working - around the house, outside and even at a job. A few years ago when I was working the tax season, people came in grumpy, quiet or just tired. 'How are YOU today?' I would ask. Taxes can be boring, but I'd see if I could find common ground: 'You have a 2-year-old' ... or 'I love your (whatever).' Usually they would brighten up, tell me about their kids, a house they wanted to buy with the tax refund, a vacation, etc. I had so many people say they never had such a nice time getting their taxes done. Some even became 'once-a-year- friends.' Some stopped in if they were around the area just to say hi. Why? Because I brought them a bit of fun or joy or even just a smile. Made my days go by a bit faster also. By the way, I 'trained' most employees in my office to do that and we sometimes had a lot of fun - even doing taxes!"
