help people feel special

Want to hear something a family counselor once shared with me years ago that I have never forgotten? She said we wouldn't believe the amount of people she counsels who "feel invisible" in their lives. That's sad, isn't it?

It takes such little effort on our parts to help others feel seen and heard. This week I had passed by a person standing outside of a tax preparation business, dressed in a Statue of Liberty costume and holding a big sign. She wasn't twirling the sign to attract attention to the business, and she looked bored. Really, who knows how she felt standing there as cars blindly passed by ... feisty? sassy? stupid? self-conscious? amused? Or maybe she didn't care one way or the other.
not the actual person :-D

And although I realize it was her choice to accept the costumed job, I wanted to wave to her out of my car window, just in case no one else had acknowledged her that day. I wanted to help make her feel 'seen.' So I waved big with my big hand, and tooted the horn. And she waved back, and her sign began to twirl.

New scenario ... at the Verizon Center in D.C. on the Monday after Christmas, hubby, daughter and I were walking through the turnstiles to attend a Clippers/Wizards NBA game. I said hello to the security guy checking purses and asked how he was doing. I looked him in the eye.

He answered, "I'm doing great, thanks. How are you? You know you're the first person tonight to ask me that?"

Maybe I was and maybe I wasn't - maybe he was trying to make ME feel special by saying that? No matter. I was glad I had inquired. And I was happy I had waved to Ms. Statue of Liberty. What amount of time and effort did it require of me? A few seconds. Small efforts ... big rewards. (Plus, I find it fun to interact with people wherever I venture; a quick chat, a laugh, a little flirting - yes even with strangers. People can teach us a lot.

How can you help make a stranger feel
special and 'seen' today?

"So, so true, girlfriend! Life presents enough situations beyond our control. Stop whining and move along when it is within your power to do so. Take action and take control!"
