memory impact

When I'm interacting with our three cutie-pie grandbambini (ages 1, 3, 5), I often wonder what memories of Nonna Suza I am helping them to formulate. What might they remember later in life from our interactions? Was I fun? Was I loving? Was I silly? What will they remember about our house and the places we go? Was Nonna Suza active with them and playful?

Certainly one memory they'll take away is about the long dogtag chain I wear often. It holds various charms representing our four kids, three grandkids, daughter-in-law, and my biggest baby of all - hubby. :-D

The kids usually sit on my lap to look at, and separate, the tags to find their names; we read everyone's name. Since it's a repeated gesture during the times we spend together, most likely they'll remember after I'm gone that I wore their precious names around my neck and close to my heart.

When I ask our two younger kids (ages 19, 23) what memories they have of growing up, I relish in listening to their answers as they usually surprise me with specific memories, incidents and activities I have forgotten, or which I didn't think impacted them much at the time.

Our memories of people who have passed through our lives are both positive and negative - we can remember something bad about someone, just as well as we can recall someone with fondness.

So let's be careful what we give others to store in their memories. And what may pack a punch.

When we interact with ANYONE in life, what memory(ies) are we creating for that person after we've left their company? Or further down the path of life ... in a year, six years, or 20?

Will they remember a repeated personality trait or gesture, such as kindheartedness, compassion and loving? Or will they remember that we were bitchy, irritable, negative, possibly hot/cold or sweet/sour?

Are we making a positive impact?
Are we putting forth our best selves
to make every interaction good?

"My favorite motto: not about how old I am - but how I live each day!"
~ Mary W in MD

"Love your reflection. Mrs France, who is 95, independent, and still living alone, said the bible says 70 and no more. She said, 'Since I turned 70, I have been given the best gift each and every year ... life."
~ Victoria S in MD

"I am totally in sync with your post about age. I always say to younger people who make fun of older people ... getting older happens to all of us if we are lucky. I also think that we are obsessed with other people's ages but we are ageless in our own heads. In any event, your snippet was superb!"
~ Phyllis I in MD

"Every year on my birthday I just count down to how many years I can retire!!! Woo Hoo!!!"
~ Maryanne D in MD

"Sending you my love today and always. I know Debbie is sending hers from above. Thank you for your beautiful message."
~ Liz R in MD

"I feel the whining of how old we're getting is stupid. I know I'm 57 and I intend to have that number get a lot higher. I love being alive, no matter how down and depressed I am, it's much better than the alternative. I wear my age proudly, but I refuse to 'dress old' or act old, why should I? I still feel young and not ready to actually be OLD yet. I have some aches and pains (mostly from a fall and NOT arthritis, thankfully) but I am starting to fight back and get into better shape so that I keep that alternative away as long as possible."
