LEADERSHIP...seasoned with GRACE!
Mindful leadership that transforms lives

As Barack Obama embarks on a second term as President of the United States of America, one word keeps popping up when I think of him: GRACE.

If you are a collector of Studio A!, you'll recall the November 2008 issue where I said he was good for our collective self-esteem. He and Michelle Obama, exude such grace under fire, it's inmutable. It's Empowering!

2nd term

As a young business woman building a solid business in a fleeting world of gimmicks, saturation, fickle people and a fickle economy, the POTUS and FLOTUS have been a CONSTANT source of inspiration and motivation, just by being themselves.

Leadership conjures up so many divergent ideas. For some, it's a chance to 'rule', to 'control'. For some of us, it's an opportunity to INSPIRE. The leaders we love most, did just that. From Jesus to Gandhi, from MLK to JFK. It's no wonder President Obama was the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize even before entering office. He generated hope and inspiration...WORLDWIDE.

What truly inspires me is the way he transcends negativity. It's as if he's OBLIVIOUS to it! He and Michelle, both, handle negative press, naysayers, etc, with such grace, calm and collectedness. They're aware of it, they acknowledge it, but they move past it. Always seeking

common ground and goodness in others.

An important quality of leadership is being steadfast and resolute. The ability to make difficult decisions, despite incuring the 'wrath' of opponents, speaks to the FIRM resolve of a person who has weighed all options and is convicted of their decision. This, in stark contrast to those easily swayed by money, threats and special interests.

But what truly sealed the deal for me was watching President Obama's 'thank you' to his staff. You can tell a lot about a person by how they act when the world's NOT watching; a point made vividly clear this election cycle. While some were quick to call him 'weak', I saw a REAL man, a PERSON. I saw someone not much different from me or my husband. A young, idealistic black man who dared to defy convention...and SUCCEEDED!

It's important to highlight race because the journey to TRUE equity for African-Americans in America is still in progress. And while some mud-slinging is par for the course in politics, no other president in history has endured as much hatred, defiance, threats to themselves and their families, as he has.

President Obama was no doubt overcome with a range of emotions, ranging from RELIEF to intense gratitude, and probably a bit of disbelief that he actually won again! I tell you what: there is nothing more BEAUTIFUL and POWERFUL than a man filled with sincere GRATITUDE and is not afraid to tell you so!  Most compelling was that his speech wasn't about him, it was about the ONENESS he exuded. When he addressed his team, he didn't address them as subordinates, but as individuals who were EQUALLY as capable of leadership as he is.

Our society has grown accustomed to false bravado and egocentric pride. We have been conditioned to believe that these are the ethos of leadership...and it has cost us a bit of social capital at home and abroad.

Graceful leadership teaches us to leverage our power to inspire self-reliance and leadership in others through collaboration. It teaches us to respect others' journey, no matter how different from our own. Graceful leadership empowers us to leave an enduring legacy not just in policies and buildings, but in the hearts and minds of the people we serve. THIS is the POWER OF TRANSFORMATION. A.

"By believing passionately in something that still does not exist, we create it. The nonexistent is whatever we have not sufficiently desired."

An Apple a Day...
a bunch of apples Benefits of Apples
It turns out there's some truth to the above saying. Aside from the high fiber, obvious anti oxidative benefits and high pectin content, apples have been shown to significantly impact colon, liver & breast cancer, diabetes, arthritis, bone density, decrease in cholesterol, asthma and Alzheimer's, to name a few.

Apple cider and Apple cider vinegar have long been recognized for their anti-fungal and antibacterial effects helping rid the body of toxins and parasites that affect hair follicles.

Take advantage of the impending fall chill and sip on 'sum hot cider for a change! An ounce of prevention costs less than a cure!

THE ROOT: A resounding SUCCESS!

The Root: The Myth, The Method, The Maintenance of Textured Hair recently concluded in Minneapolis. This ground-breaking series which focused on de-mystifying textured hair, giving women a forum to share experiences, joys and triumphs in dealing with their hair.

The brainchild of Anika Robbins, Creator of ANIKA INTERNATIONAL COSMETICS and Lead Producer at ANIKA & Friends, care was taken to ensure a safe space to deal authentically with societal and historical views and the media influences shaping our hair and personal style choices.

"The goal was to help women have an honest conversation about WHY they choose the styles they do, coming to terms with their own feelings about their natural texture.' says Robbins. 'No other race has been traumatized, stigmatized by/for their hair, their skin-their very ESSENCE-than people of African descent'.

At first, the series was designed to address the challenges faced by women seeking style solutions for active living i.e. keeping their hair from reverting after a workout. But as a 25 year cosmetology veteran, Robbins saw the need to go deeper.

The series delved into the language  and perceptions of hair, exploring our relationship with our hair. A historical exploration was expounded on during the panel discussion at the series launch featuring Dr. Verona Mitchell, a cultural expert, Heather McElrath a cosmetology educator and natural hair expert, Sylvia Williams, the celebrity guest panelist who's worked with Smokey Robinson, Tamar Braxton, Ricki Lake, Sean Puffy Combs, Faith Evans and more. Nikki Thompson of the Meetup group, Kinky & Curly in the Twin Cities' was also present.

The series was designed to address various stages and challenges of textured hair from natural styling options to transitioning from relaxers to natural textures. A special session for families raising multiracial children was also featured and a session on 'Going Gray...Graciously' gave women options of hair color, weave & wig styles and tips to keep hair healthy and vibrant.

Sponsored in part by Organic Root Stimulator's Curls Unleashed brand, Clairol Professional, Naturally Me and others, the workshop proved to be a much needed workshop for women seeking solutions to their hair. A very special edition addressing thinning and hair loss was presented by the University of MInnesota's Health Disparities Program with a presentation on breast cancer awareness. This edition was also supported by the African American Breast Cancer Alliance who also shared timely information on the need to test EARLY for breast cancer even if you don't' have a family history of it.

Due to demand, special workshops will be featured at the Robbins Urban Wellness Retreat beginning Spring 2013. A national tour is also in the works.
The Root Resource Guide was published to help consumers identify hairstylists. For a listing, visit, www.urbanmaventv.com under 'Urban Guide'. The ROOT Resource Guide is distributed metro wide, and soon, nationwide in the Spring 2013 edition.
