"Polite" homophobia; it ain't over yet
|
|---|
Greetings!
My greatest pleasure serving as one of three straight Out Boulder board members last year was participating in SpeakingOUT appearances. I took advantage of being a white-haired, 77-year-old grandfatherly type with no (known) GLBTQ members in my family. My primary ally/activist pitch was around human rights and the necessary codification of those human rights into civil rights for all. My gay rights activism has deep roots in California and was matured on the boards of PFLAG Boulder County, the Colorado Alliance for Family Equality (CAFÉ) and Out Boulder. What continues to inform my activism includes two "chosen" daughters and a "chosen" brother, all in same-sex marriages.
My activism is partially motivated by the "polite" homophobia comments that pop up in my own straight communities. Remarks like "You certainly participate in unpopular causes;" this to me from a strong Democrat who, I feel, always votes on behalf of gay rights but who has probably never rubbed elbows with, let alone hugged or kissed, anyone in the queer community.

Out Boulder and Parenting Place would like to form a partnership in order to provide services to the community of LGBTQ families with children ages 0-5 in the Boulder area.
We are in the process of determining what types of services will best meet the needs of families. Possible program options include: family support groups, parenting education, access to resources, and community building events.
In order to tailor our program planning to meet your needs most effectively, we welcome your feedback and suggestions.
Please let us know:
1) What format would you like to see - Facilitated support group, social gathering, potluck, educational offerings, other ideas?
2) What days/times work well for you?
3) How often would you like to see the group meet? Monthly, weekly?
4) Where would you like the group to meet? Pridehouse, Parenting Place, or somewhere else?
5) Are you interested in being one of the leaders/facilitators of a group, or a helpful volunteer?
Your suggestions will help us to create a group that is most useful! Please contact Jen Spolnik with your feedback.
