Dear Boulder County

 Greetings!

Ah....Valentine's Day!  When I was in 7th grade, it was a great excuse.  An excuse to send flowers anonymously to Holly Antonic in algebra class!  (Sorry, doll.  I know you thought it was Jeff Schroeder.)   Today...a million years later...I see Valentine's Day as a great opportunity: to celebrate relationship.   I see Out Boulder as being in a long-term relationship with the LGBT community.  We truly are in a partnership-a great collaboration that, despite the inevitable ups and downs, all the shared successes and disappointments over the years, is still something you know you can count on.  We depend on each other.  We grow into our best selves by supporting each other.

Isn't that what love is all about?

You know who loves you.   Won't you send Out Boulder a Valentine this year?  Instead of chocolates or roses, you can show us the love with just a small donation.  And we'll put it towards keeping programs like Speaking OUT strong in Boulder County.  Which is a great thing to support because, if I were in 7th grade here today, I'd just go up and give Holly a big kiss!

Happy Valentine's Day!

In Solidarity,

Laura Edwards
Out Boulder Board President

  COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT:
Celebrate Civil Unions at the Red Party

Red Party 2013 This weekend we have special reason to come together as a community to celebrate.

As many of you know we have been bringing you live coverage from the Colorado state capitol regarding civil unions, via
Twitter, Facebook and our E-Newsletter. We even sponsored and participated in LGBT Lobby day with One Colorado and
went down to the capitol to talk to our legislators, asking them for equality for all LGBT people of Colorado and specifically allowed voices from our own backyard be heard.

We have seen the battle over the past three years; the heartbreaking testimonies of our community, the countless
committee hearings and rallies asking to be heard. This year is our year. We have made it through several
readings of the bill as well as multiple committee hearings. We succeeded on Monday in the Colorado state senate,
passing the bill through with great success. Now we're onto the House of Representatives where we will have our
hearings and testify yet again. This year we give the Colorado legislature another opportunity to vote on behalf of over
70% of Coloradans who support civil unions.

If that is not reason enough to celebrate then how about this; Colorado's LGBT caucus is 8 members strong, the most
in our entire nation. This speaks volumes about where we are as a state. The state of Colorado's anti-discrimination law
is up for modernization this year, to bring us up to a federal standard that 42 other states already offer. The Pentagon
announced that it would extend equal benefits to lesbian and gay service members and their families over the coming
months. AND as a nation more openly LGBT candidates won election to public office in the U.S. in 2012 than in any year
in America's history.

We've seen a lot of progress for the LGBT community in the last year, over the last election and even just in 2013. As of
January 2013, nine states-Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont, and Washington-as well as the District of Columbia- have legalized same-sex marriage. We hope Colorado will be the next to join that list.

2013 Boulder International Film Festival
"My Brother the Devil"
Feb 15 @ 9:30pm
  BIFF my brother the devil
Come to the Colorado Premiere of My Brother the Devil

Winner at Sundance, Berlin and London Film Festivals

"An energetic and imaginative tale... a film that so artfully refuses to surrender to convention." Variety

In this cool, muscular, street-smart film, swaggering gang leader Rash rules his territory in East London like a king, mentoring and watching over his sensitive younger brother Mo, who will clearly never become a very convincing gang member. Mo idolizes Rash and insists on joining his
older brother in the drug trade. It all goes terribly wrong of course, and the episode escalates into a major gang confrontation and a bloody crisis of loyalty. Bursting with energy, this film shows a part of London that we never saw during the Queen's Jubilee. Subtitled

Directed by Sally El Hosaini
Produced by Gayle Griffiths, Michael Sackler David Raedeker

UK, Feature Film, 2012, 111 min

ONE BILLION RISING began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. On February 14, 2013, V-Day's 15th anniversary, Boulder, CO organizations will join activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities, and women and men across the world as we express their outrage, demand change, strike, dance, and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women.
