Our Fight for Equality Continues

Aubree Peckham, Out Boulder LGBT

Dear Community,

On January 9th, I  witnessed history be made as the 69th General Assembly opened at the Colorado State Capitol. I sat in the gallery early this morning and watched as state representative Mark Ferrandino was appointed our first gay Speaker of the House. He proudly accepted this nomination with his husband Greg Wertsch at his side. This same morning the capitol was filled with beautiful songs from the Denver Gay Men's Chorus. This day was truly different, a momentous day in Colorado history and for that of the LGBT community.

Last May civil unions died in a special session and I left the capitol like many friends, families and allies did, in tears. This was my first time back to the Capitol since then, and wow, was this a very different experience! I was blown away to see the Denver Gay Men's Chorus singing in the gallery above our house of representatives and their families. I watched as the passing of the gavel happened and felt an almost sigh of relief. In years past Mr. Ferrandino has been a co-sponsor of the civil unions bill in Colorado. Witnessing an openly gay legislator take over as speaker of the house brought me to tears. I really believe that in that moment I finally felt that we would see equality for all Coloradans this year.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: Anti-Violence Volunteer Training at SPAN - Feb.

SPAN Volunteer training Be an agent of Change!
Use your talents and work for peace and support survivors and their children! Share your experiences and learn new skills. In the Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence (SPAN) 44 hour Paraprofessional training, you will learn about the dynamics of abuse, how to provide support in an empowering and non-judgemental way, and how to use your time to advance positive social change. Become part of the solution as we work together to end all forms of violence!

SPAN offers support and services that provide healing, hope and opportunity to adults, youth and children who have been impacted by domestic or dating violence. SPAN is working to challenge beliefs and behaviors that condone violence, and to promote equity and social justice.

Trans & Genderqueer Support Group - Weds

Boulder Trans and Genderqueer Support (BTGS) offers support group meetings and social fun for people of all ages who identify as transgender and/or identify anywhere within the gender variant spectrum/sphere/torus on Wednesdays at the Pridehouse. Our support meetings emphasize respect for peoples' experience in all types of gender variant identities, including genderqueer, third gender, trans women, trans men, trans masculine/feminine, bi-gender, genderfluid, intersex, and of course anyone questioning/deciphering their gender identity. For the safety and comfort of our group members, our meetings are not currently open to SOFFAs (significant others, family, family, friends or allies of trans and genderqueer folks)--there is a separate support group for SOFFAS. The group is consciously welcoming to gender variant people of color and persons with disabilities and we strive to build and maintain an anti-oppressive, inclusive group culture. Please come if you want support in your experience, you want to hear from others about their experience, or maybe you just want to spend time in a group of people that is accepting of you as you are.
