Trans* Awareness Week - Nov 12-18
  trans awareness week boulder
Dear Community,

Trans* Awareness Week (TAW) will begin next Monday, November 12! This is the 3rd annual TAW and this year we have selected the theme: Educating & Empowering Our Communities. We will kick off the week with Trans* 101 with the GLBTQ Resource Center's Peer Education team at CU.
We will have other great events including films, HIV Testing, a Sexual Health Workshop, an art exhibit, Safety & Inclusivity for Transgender Communities for Service Providers, Gender Violence: Know Your Rights, and much more.

We also developed a mission this year for TAW. It is: to unite and educate the trans* community and its allies through workshops, social gatherings, and other events to create a truly inclusive community to inspire and embrace the multigender experience.

Thank you to all who took part in organizing these events: Boulder Trans* & Genderqueer Support Group (BTGS), CU GLBTQ Resource Center, CU Office of Victim Assistance, CU Community Health, Peers Building Justice, BCAP, Bent Lens Cinema, Gender Identity Center, Moving to End Sexual Assault, Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence, and community members.

I welcome you to come out and show your support and be part of this meaningful week. Check out the full list of events and details.

In solidarity,

Jen Spolnik

Program & Marketing Manager

Transition by Owen Karcher

Owen Trans Awareness Week Exhibit

The art exhibit Transition will be featured beginning Nov. 12 at the Pridehouse, in time for Trans Awareness Week. In Owen's words:

Art has been an integral part of my transition. It has helped me clarify my needs and feelings about various identities throughout the last few years. I started by exploring what society says to me about gender and how I'm "supposed" to look. I then started a much more introspective process and tried to capture my emotions related to realizing and moving towards my identity as a trans person. I noticed the desire to make my experience digestible and understandable for people who don't go through this. When feeling the emotions, I created many sketches of my torso, reflecting the rough, raw, difficult reality I was going through. When asked to create a 'finished product' that could be displayed, I made much cleaner, more developed portrayals of my changing torso. The image wouldn't be whole without both parts- the easier to grasp drawings alongside the rougher, less well rounded, more honest, intimate pieces that speak to more than the predominant narrative of what it means to be trans.
