As part of our goal to get more girls into engineering, we've launched a new initiative - Sparxx. The aim of Sparxx is to provide news, events competitions, freebies and much more to girls who show an interest in CRESTA (Creativity, Engineering, Science, Technology and Art) by providing a targeted stream of communication to inspire girls to create the future they are capable of.

We are not planning to provide new content or any new activities, but instead to compile activities and information provided by yourself. If you would like to feature your CRESTA events, competetions, games or quizzes, please email relevant content to us with the subject line Website Content.

Global Survey: How to Maximize the Impact of Women Networks
There is a lot of research focused on the company perspective of "How to Build an Employee Network", but hardly any work has been done looking at the membership experience: What to do to make sure that networks live up to members' expectations? How to ensure they feel fully engaged and excited to contribute? And what are the best ways to leverage the power a network can provide?
Research is being undertaken by the Inclusion Institute.   Complete the survey

#ILookLikeAnLGBTEngineer

The recent #ILookLikeAnEngineer Twitter campaign, which I have subscribed to unreservedly and passionately has, however, triggered other helpful conversations.  But when you delve deeper into the area of gender representation and equality, you also have to acknowledge the rest of the protected characteristics that fall under 'equality and diversity'. I will restrain from commenting on the appropriateness of this list, as I have come to learn of other very real areas of discrimination and/or inequality that occur in academia, Read more

NWED Sponsors

EnergyUnearthed
EnergyUnearthed is an International Festival programme of science and arts which celebrates Cumbria's unique position at the core of the biggest international challenge of our time: ENERGY ... generation, transmission, use, conservation.

EnergyUnearthed's purpose is to give the public access to an understanding of energy science in new and inspiring ways. We aim to inspire and energise our youth; to bring education and industry closer together; and to increase the potential for retention of talent, inward tourism, and inward business investment.

The programme is year-long, with events across the year leading up to a fun, intensive period of family friendly activities in the summer. The first event is aimed at educators and STEAM stakeholders on 13 October, Newton Rigg College, Penrith (Book now), followed by SwitchOn, a day of high energy talks at Energus in November.
The Future Leaders of Industry are ... Female
In an unprecedented result at the EDT Future Industry Leaders Awards, held at the Royal Society of Engineering last week, the winners of all the four prizes on offer were female, having completed stunning projects for major science and engineering employers.

Dr Gordon Mizner, Chief Executive of EDT, observes, "I hope that the success of these award winners shows that a momentum is being built which will bring a critical mass of women into industry to fill the very real skills gaps, particularly in science, technology, engineering and maths which are appearing as older generations of scientists and engineers approach retirement in vast numbers." And Finally...

Don't forget to forward our enewsletter to your friends and contacts, male or female, and help to inspire more young women to consider engineering and technology as a career.
