March 2016
In this Issue

March is finally here and spring is just around the corner! It is surely a sign of spring when Daylight Savings Time, otherwise known as when we "Spring Forward," begins at 2 a.m. on Sunday March 13th, 2016. Don't forget to set your clocks ahead on Saturday evening.

March is National Nutrition month. Most of you recognize the importance of healthy nutrition, as well as the multiple benefits associated with balanced dietary habits. Our nutritionist, Susan Cutshaw, is dedicated to helping each member of your family reach his or her health and wellness goals in a timely manner. Susan is available for both ½ hour ($37) and one hour ($64) consultations. You may schedule your consultation by contacting Susan at 734-665-3738 ext. 46.

During the month of March we are offering a risk free trial membership. Friends and family may join Liberty for one month and pay only for one month of dues. If you refer a friend or family member to us and they sign up for a trial membership, you will receive four guest passes (valued at $72). Please note that if your friend or family member decides to join Liberty when the month is over, full joining fees will apply. Please contact Membership at 734-665-3738 ext. 12 for details.

National Nutrition Month - "Savor the Flavor of Eating Right"
From the desk of Susan Cutshaw, M.S.

In 1980, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formally the American Dietetic Association) designated March as National Nutrition Month.  Part of this year's theme is to "Savor the Flavor of Eating Right" by enjoying the tastes, pleasures, and traditions of healthy meal choices.  The idea is to promote habits that lead to developing an overall healthier lifestyle.  Taking the time to cook, sit and enjoy a meal can go a long way towards accomplishing that goal.

In support of National Nutrition Month we are inviting members to share their favorite recipes.  We'll showcase one each month in the newsletter.  Please use recipes that include whole natural foods with little to no processed ingredients.

Submissions can be emailed to me or dropped off at the front desk.

Please indicate if you'd like to be credited with the recipe or if you prefer to be anonymous.

To kick this off, here's one of my easy favorites.  I will be using this format to showcase your recipes.

Beans and Rice Casserole
Ingredients -
1 cup cooked long grain brown rice
1-15 ounce can of black beans (BPA free)
1 cup chopped onions (or other veggies)
1 jar of your favorite salsa
Approximately ½ cup of grated cheese (cheddar or mozzarella work well)
Large Pyrex pie pan or shallow casserole dish (approximately the same size as a pie pan)

Step 1 - Follow cooking instructions for rice.  While rice is cooking, chop onions, drain beans, grate cheese.

Step 2 - Start with a layer of cooked rice in bottom of pan, then add a layer of beans, followed by the onions (or other chopped veggies) and salsa.  Sprinkle the grated cheese on top (enough to cover the salsa).

Step 3 - Bake uncovered @ 350 approximately 40 minutes or until the cheese appears slightly crisp around the edges.  Let it rest for 10 minutes before digging in.

The Spa at Liberty

Meet Kristen DiBlassio, Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT)
Kristen DiBlassio
Kristen joined The Spa at Liberty team in September of 2014, and has established a devout following during her time here.  She received licensure from the State of Michigan through Irene's Myomassology Institute where she studied Swedish Massage, Lymphatic Drainage, Myofascial Release and Muscle Mechanics, in addition to other modalities.

Kristen continues to pursue her passion in John F. Barnes Myofascial Release Therapy through ongoing education.  Myofascial Release, or MFR, is an effective hands-on technique that involves applying gentle, sustained pressure into the myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion.  Each MFR session is performed directly on skin without oils or creams.

In addition, Kristen received certification in Thai Massage from the Chicago School of Thai Yoga Massage.  She views Thai massage as a modality uniquely suited to counteract the repetitive movements we perform and the stress we place upon our bodies on a daily basis. Through a series of compressions, passive stretches and acupressure, Thai Massage helps people return to their natural state of health and balance.

Kristen maintains a holistic approach to bodywork by remaining current in the practices of meditation, yoga, Chi Kung, personal fitness and dietary consciousness.  She is fascinated by the symbiotic relationship of the body's anatomy and energy.

Kristen holds a Bachelor's Degree in English from Miami University and in her leisure time, enjoys spending time with her husband and two teenage daughters, and walks in the woods with her dog.

Kristen is available for appointments Monday through Thursday, 9am-1pm, and Fridays from 2pm-8pm.  Mention this article and receive 15% off any massage booked with Kristen in the month of March!
