The Transformation Challenge is in full swing! Participation is at an all time high in our group fitness classes, tennis courts are booked and the fitness floor is buzzing with excitement. We are thrilled to see so many families enjoying the Lagoon Waterpark and Activity Center; it certainly keeps the kids busy on these winter days.

Traditionally, February is the month when many people lose sight of their fitness resolutions. Don't let this happen to you! Whether it is to improve your tennis game, learn to swim or prepare for a triathlon, our experienced instructors can help you meet your goals. Liberty is proud to be your home away from home, and to be part of your extended family. We are here to help you Live Life Well!

February is Heart Healthy Month
From the desk of Susan Cutshaw, M.S.

Why the right food is so important
Food is essential for life.  It provides energy, protein, and a variety of nutrients.  But what is it about food that is helpful or harmful for a healthy heart?  As it turns out the foods that are good for the heart are also good for the prevention of obesity, diabetes, and certain cancers.

The literature is clear that eating a plant based diet provides a multitude of benefits.  It's low in calories, high in vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, and phytochemicals.  It's low in saturated fat while providing essential fatty acids.  Lean meats (limiting red meat), fish (especially cold water fish like salmon) and nuts are also included in a heart healthy diet.  What foods are out?   That's easy...processed refined foods.  That includes foods that have additional sugars of any kind.

Eliminating those kinds of sugary foods could go a long way toward a better diet and a healthier cardiovascular profile. The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) recently reported that for 71.4% of Americans, processed sugar makes up approximately 13% of their diet.  That's well over the World Health Organization's (WHO)  5 % recommendation.

Michael Pollan, author of Omnivore's Dilemma and In Defense of Food, has compiled a list of 64 "food rules".  They are humorous and refreshing plus support American Heart Association recommendations and the revised 2015 Dietary Guidelines. Here are just a few.
  • Eat food, mostly plants, not too much
  • Avoid food products with more than five ingredients
  • Eat foods that will eventually rot
  • Don't eat breakfast cereals that change the color of the milk
  • Don't buy food where you buy your gas
  • If it came from a plant eat it; if it was made in a plant don't

Today is National Wear Red Day

From the website of the American Heart Association

"Why Go Red? Heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year, killing approximately one woman every 80 seconds.  Fortunately, we can change that because 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events may be prevented with education and action. That's why this year we are asking that you wear red on National Wear Red Day and Donate to Go Red For Woman. By doing so you help support educational programs to increase women's awareness and critical research to discover scientific knowledge about cardiovascular health".

New Year, New You, New Spa!

January is behind us and many of us have been working hard on New Year's resolutions, the Transformation Challenge, or making changes that are meaningful to us.

The Spa at Liberty has been quietly undergoing a transformation of its own over the last couple of years.  With five professional, experienced massage therapists, we now offer massage seven days a week with an emphasis on therapeutic massage and Thai massage.  We've expanded our nail services, offering services six days a week.  Enter our private nail studio, sit down with one of our two meticulous and professional nail technicians, and leave relaxed and ready for whatever comes next!

The Spa at Liberty will be offering regular articles in this newsletter, on topics such as:  the differences between Thai massage and table massage, the banning of microbeads, or the latest trends in color and style.

Beginning in March, one of our Spa providers will be featured each month so you can get to know our staff, their education, experience and interests.
There may even been a 'hidden' bonus for those who read the upcoming articles - so...stay tuned!
