Happy New Year!
January 2016
In This Issue

It has been a pleasure to see familiar friends and families back after the holiday rush, as well as many new faces entering the club with enthusiasm! It is our hope that 2016 will represent a time of healthy living, improved wellness, and happiness to each and every one of you.

We greatly appreciate your continued patience during the restoration process and parking lot expansion. As we welcome in the New Year, there are several exciting changes and additions. For example, the new Spinner Blade Ion Spin bikes have arrived! These new bikes offer many advanced features and cutting edge technology, and we look forward to providing education on these new features in coming months.

Secondly, we are excited to present our new logo!  We hope you agree it represents a more contemporary and progressive image of Liberty Athletic Club.

Best regards,

More class offerings and class times!
There are now 45 Classes offered every week
to help you achieve your fitness goals.

Metabolic Resistance Training (MRT) - 60 Min.

This class targets an extensive range of fitness components:  strength, endurance, power, flexibility, agility and balance.  Designed to improve comprehensive fitness and body composition, it is an intense, highly-effective workout. To achieve maximum results, participants should try to attend this class 1-2 times per week.

Strength - 30 Min.
Individuals seeking improvements in strength will find this structured strength class a perfect complement to their existing exercise program.   Small class sizes help to ensure participants receive personalized instruction and appropriate exercise selection, based on needs and abilities.  Following a short, tailored warm-up, classes use functional, whole-body exercises to help promote strength and lean muscle.

Cardio - 30 Min.
This structured interval training class is designed to improve conditioning and burn calories. Not only is this class designed to take the boredom out of aerobic exercise; it is completely unique to each individual.  By using heart rate and perceived exertion, instructors coach participants at an individual level, regardless of fitness.  Participants are strongly encouraged to utilize a heart rate monitor, e.g., the MYZONE, Polar, etc.

Kari Miller

Kari Miller, a Junior Tennis member at Liberty, ended her year on a high note, winning the Girls' 14 Singles at the USTA Midwest Level 1 Fall Closed Championship, November 7-9. Completing a successful year of tennis, ranked #2 in the Midwest Section and #84 in the nation, Kari's future holds even more ambitious goals. And why shouldn't it?

Anne Miller Borus, Kari's aunt, played on the professional circuit and reached a world ranking of #44 in 1998! With good tennis genes, her aunt as a role model and a love for the game, Kari competed in her first tennis tournament at age 8. Early success and a strong desire to compete followed.

"The strength of my game when I started playing was consistency," Kari shared, "but if that was the only strength in my game now, I'd be on the court forever!"

She credits her coach, Dan Goldberg, with helping to make her a more complete player. "Dan's helping me to become more aware," Kari explained, "by getting me to move in a bit and watch for the short ball, when I have someone on the run."

"Kari has always been a very consistent player," Dan concurred, "who makes very few mistakes." "She is currently playing a more aggressive all-court style of play, to put her opponents on the defensive and win points on her own terms."

Kari with Coach Dan Goldberg

Kari plays tennis six days per week, including two private lessons with Dan. When she's not on the court, Kari leads the well-rounded life of an eight-grader at Tappan Middle School. In addition to her studies, Kari enjoys playing in the school's band, reading and photography.

In 2016, Kari hopes to raise her national ranking in the Girls' 14's to the top 50, as well as participate in more 16-under tournaments. Future goals include playing on a Division 1 collegiate tennis team and 'turning pro'.

While becoming a professional in any sport is an elusive objective, only reached by a very few, Kari appears to be made of the right stuff. In addition to being a hard worker and an excellent tennis player, she is driven by a very strong competitive spirit.

"Kari is one of the most competitive players I have coached," Dan emphasized. "She always demands excellence from herself on the court, and absolutely hates to lose! She has a bright future in the game, and her potential has no limit."

"I'm always happiest when I win," Kari concluded, "and I remind myself how good that feels when I'm playing."

That inner motivation can't be coached. That inner motivation separates the amateurs from the pros.

Resolutions...
From the desk of Susan Cutshaw, M.S. Nutritionist

Many New Year's resolutions often focus on weight loss leading to diet programs that promise to drop pounds in a short amount of time. Research has shown that these types of weight loss plans fail miserably and may cause more harm than good.

Experts suggest that common mistakes like setting unrealistic goals, skipping breakfast, or consuming too many calories from juices and alcohol may sabotage success. Instead, they suggest adopting an eating plan that provides results lasting a lifetime, not just a few weeks. Here are a few positive tips that may help.
  • Choose an eating plan that fits your lifestyle - and reduces refined foods and hidden calories

  • Keep a food journal - research shows that monitoring food intake will keep you on track

  • Eat whole real foods - keeping in mind that unprocessed refined foods still have calories

  • Increase consumption of veggies and fruits - a cup of raw spinach is only 7 calories

  • Consume 70 % of your calories before dinner - we are more likely to make better food choices during the day than at night when we're tired

  • Limit alcohol - 5 ounces of red wine equal approximately 121 calories
Successful weight maintenance can be a life-long challenge. Developing healthy lifestyle habits is the first step to your success.
