Deceptive Marketing - it's not cool to make stuff up
|
By Pete Vriesenga Our March 23 DMA E-Bulletin included an expose' of the Diamond Empire Band (DEB) which presented their first showcase in January. DEB is gearing-up and presenting itself as a regional band with a great website and promo, so they should of course find their rightful place in Colorado's wedding & live entertainment market. If what they claim is true? In a more-than-modest display of pretense, the Diamond Empire Band claims they're "voted one of the country's best party bands". Their ad on "the knot" boasts that DEB musicians play "alongside the likes of Alicia Keys, Kanye West and Prince to name a few. Best of all, they are self-managed, so you pay a fraction of the price for a band in this quality bracket." I attended DEB's 3/24 showcase and found a group of fine local musicians, but they were scrambling beforehand just to put the program together. Their promo booklet/cd was excellent, but I suspect is was produced by a different band entirely. The promo video of the Diamond Empire Band posted on gigmasters.com is identical to the promo video of the Silver Arrow Band out of New York (click "videos" after going to either site). The purchaser would never know
... that DEB and the Silver Arrow Band use essentially the same song list and promo. Despite the band's claim to being "self-managed", the purchaser would never know that DEB is one of a dozen bands run by a New York talent agency called the "International Musicians League."

Soprano debuts in 2 Met Opera roles within day
| By Associated Press April 5, 2014
NEW YORK (AP) - Kristine Opolais got to bed at 5 a.m. Saturday after singing her first "Madama Butterfly'" at the Metropolitan Opera and going out for dinner. Just 2½ hours later, the 34-year-old Latvian soprano was awakened by Met General Manager Peter Gelb, who wanted to know if she could take over a televised performance of Puccini's "La Boheme" that afternoon after Anita Hartig took ill. Given the crazy question and unusual hour, Opolais said no thanks. Five minutes later, she changed her mind. Opolais on Saturday become the first singer in the Met's 131-year history to make two major role debuts within a day. When the final curtain came down, Opolais covered her face and dropped to her knees to the stage, overcome with emotion during the 5-minute ovation. In addition to 4,000 people at the Metropolitan Opera House, her Mimi was seen live by an estimated 92,000 in movie theaters in North America and 110,000 more in 32 nations in Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. "I still think it's not reality," she said. Read On |

Englewood Arts Presents: FINAL CONCERT BY THE AINOMÄE ENSEMBLE THIS SEASON Date: Saturday ~ April 26, 2014 Time: 2:00 PM Venue: Hampden Hall (located on the 2nd level of the Englewood Civic Center)* 1000 Englewood Parkway
Englewood Arts Presents pulls out all of the stops for a program featuring eight of the Colorado Symphony's musical leaders performing together in one grand work. Note that this will be the 4th and final concert by the 'Ainomäe Ensemble' this season (the grand finale concert of the season will take place on May 17 ~ The Olga Wolosyn Memorial Concert featuring the Up Close and Musical ensemble performing works by Mozart, Gershwin, Bartok, and others).
 | Silver Ainomäe | The program: Schubert: Octet in F major, D. 803 Colorado Symphony Musicians: Yumi Hwang-Williams & Boram Kang, violins Basil Vendryes, viola Silver Ainomäe, cello Karl Fenner, bass Jason Shafer, clarinet Michael Thornton, horn Chad Cognata, bassoon The Octet (for winds and strings), composed in March of 1824, was commissioned by Austrian nobleman, philanthropist, and amateur composer/clarinetist, Count Ferdinand Troyer. It came from the same period as two of Schubert's other major and well-known chamber works, the 'Rosamunde' and 'Death and the Maiden' string quartets. Though it lays no claim to originality, it manages to be purest Schubert while being clearly and unapologetically based on the model of Beethoven's then over-popular Septet. Consisting of six movements, the Octet takes almost an hour to perform. It boasts the largest scale for any chamber work by Schubert. Note: Ainomäe Ensemble performances this season have become very popular. You are encouraged to arrive early to assure ticket availability and best seat selection. Website: www.englewoodarts.org Facebook: Englewood Arts Concert Series Phone: 303.806.8196 Tickets are General Admission: $15.00 Adults | $12.00 (60+) | FREE (under 18) Available at www.englewoodarts.org or at the door beginning 1 hour prior to concert time.

Money Doesn't Talk ... It Roars!
|
 | Rod Taylor |
By DMA Member Rod Taylor
Recently, the Supreme Court of the United States sent a little message home to those of us who thought we were living in the land of the free and the brave where every honest person who can get up and go to work in the morning has an equal shot at the brass ring. That's true. One person, one vote and all that. It's just that, now, if you have a lot of money, or if you work for a group or corporation willing to spend a lot of money to buy more than their share of equality, the door to that equality is wide open and the Supreme Court says "Come on in!" How equal are you? Depends on how much money you have doesn't it? Thanks a lot Supreme Court! Read On

Robert Reich explains why we need a $15 minimum wage
|
This week the U.S. Senate will be debating whether or not to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour. But according to recent reports, there are already a number of senators who are considering a watered-down compromise on a smaller increase that would still leave millions of American workers stuck with poverty wage jobs.1
| Raise the Minimum Wage to $15 Per Hour | The truth is, if we really want to grow our economy and actually lift workers out of poverty, then we should really be talking about raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour, and definitely not even debating anything lower than $10.10. Last week, MoveOn members in Republican congressional districts across the country rallied outside of their members of Congress' offices demanding they support an increase in the minimum wage. But here's how one Republican representative's staff responded: "I guess MoveOn doesn't believe in math."2 We're actually big believers in math here at MoveOn. So we thought we'd have former Labor Secretary Robert Reich explain it for them in 7 easy steps

How much would it cost customers for Walmart to pay a living wage?
|
By Kenneth Quinnell 4/4/2014
If Walmart Paid Its Workers a Living Wage So They Wouldn't Need Food Stamps, How Much More Would It Cost Customers?
Companies like Walmart often claim they can't afford to raise employee salaries because it would cause them to raise prices, which would hurt customers, decrease sales and then hurt the very employees whose salaries they raised, leading to layoffs and less hours. Ignoring the fact that they could easily absorb any such cost increases by slightly slimming down their billions of dollars of profits, the math just doesn't add up. (Don't forget, Walmart is a major recipient of corporate welfare, raking in billions of dollars each year in food stamps.) Read On

Audition requirements:
* 2 scales * 2 short works in contrasting styles, or one work containing sections with contrasting styles * Sightreading
This is a great opportunity for young musicians to work with outstanding conductors and mentors, including GBYO Artistic Director Gary Lewis, the Director of Orchestral Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder. Working with him is an amazing artistic staff comprised of Emily Bowman, Erik Johnson, and Paul Rowinski. GBYO also hosts a unique and innovative mentorship program, giving students the opportunity to work side by side with professional musicians on a regular basis. We support the school music programs; all students are required to participate in their parallel school ensemble. We are looking for young musicians ages 6-21 to join our three orchestras and Wind Ensemble. Students of all instruments and all skill levels are encouraged to audition! |

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
