 Monday, March 31, 5:30 PM
New Member Orientation at 5:15 PM
Food & Beverages Available
AGENDA:
Swear-in board member Michael Weaver as DMA Vice-President for the remained of Thomas Blomster's elected term. Regretfully, Thomas tendered his resignation eff. 4/1/14 to pursue career opportunities. A new c ollaboration between the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and the Colorado Rockies. This could be a model business partnership at a time when symphony orchestras are struggling nationwide. The musicians support the effort, but the AFM claims the orchestra is violating national media agreements. Is this something that needs changing?
Presentation on features and benefits of DMA's new website ( www.denvermusicians.org) and how to use this powerful tool for networking and promotion. Please note that this site is still under construction.Denver Musicians Association

Denver's 'Diamond Empire Band' - a "fraction of the price"
|
By Pete Vriesenga
Recall the days of John, Paul, George and Ringo, when individual musicians, each with unique talents came together to form a "band." This product branding served the interests of the consumer as much as it helped to drive the business. Like baseball, it's not uncommon for attendees of a Chicago Symphony concert to identify every member of the brass section, from principal trumpet through section trombone. And, was there ever any doubt that Stan Getz and Zoot Sims both played tenor for Woody Herman in the original "four brothers" sax section of 1947?
Accomplished, professional musicians continue this great legacy while performing weddings and events as a substantial portion of their livelihood. Unfortunately, great musicians often lose work to inferior and amateur bands, only because many purchasers of live music have never hired a band before. Wedding and party planners can easily fall prey to deceptive marketing practices because, at the end of the day, a band of independent contractors are legally obligated to do little more than show up and play.
Magical Ethernet Mirrors
In a feat likely unparalleled in the music industry, The Diamond Empire Band website names just three musicians who appear in six different bands in six major cities. In Miami they're known as The Bay Kings Band In Austin - The Royal Dukes In San Francisco - The Lucky Devils In Boston - Silver Arrow Band In Philadelphia - The Bachelor Boys Band
"Voted one of the country's best party bands"
WHY PAY MORE when all six mirrored websites claim they're "completely self-managed, and so you get the best musicians in the country for a fraction of the price: you'll be very pleasantly surprised at how far your budget goes for a top tier band... "
WHY PAY MORE when all six mirrored websites claim they're all "voted one of the country's best party bands" COME SEE THEM FOR YOURSELF in a rare Denver appearance: Mon Mar 24th Time: 8pm until 9pm Venue: The Walnut Room Address: 3131 Walnut Street, Denver, CO 80205

Minnesota CEO Henson to Leave
|
With Henson's departure, Minnesota Orchestra faces many questions beyond Vänskä's fate
 |
Minnesota Orchestra CEO Michael Henson testified before a legislative panel in January 2013, during the year-plus lockout of musicians. Photo by John Whiting
| By Doug Grow | 03/21/14 Minnpost With some pats on the back rather than a push out the door, Michael Henson is gone as the chief executive officer of the Minnesota Orchestral Association. Henson won't officially "step down" from his position until Aug. 31, and he will be available to consult for the board "as needed" for a period of time after that. But it's assumed by most that Henson's days as a decision-maker are over now. With Henson gone, two big questions remain: Will Osmo Vänskä be asked to return as artistic director/conductor? Would he accept if asked? Many questions aheadBut there are scores of other questions, too: Will more musicians leave the orchestra? Will the public rally around whatever constitutes the new orchestra? Can the orchestra rediscover the chemistry that had made the Minnesota Orchestra elite? Can new management find a way to bring new audiences into Orchestra Hall? The first step toward any chance at healing wounds from the lockout, the departure of Henson, now has been taken. Read On

Join us for the popular stained glass series, featuring the Colorado Symphony in a delightful collaboration and a beautiful setting!
Yumi Hwang-Williams, violin Claude Sim, violin
Four Seasons is Vivaldi's best-known work, and is among the most popular pieces of baroque music. This colorful piece captures the essence of each season. Peppered with silvery pizzicato notes, "Winter" call to mind ice rain from the high tones. Evoking a thunderstorm in its final movement, "Summer" is often dubbed, "Storm."
One of the most rare and exciting treats of this concert is that Concertmaster Yumi Hwang-Williams and Associate Concertmaster Claude Sim will perform Bach's Concerto for 2 Violins, Strings and Continuo in D Minor. These elite musicians represent the beauty and power of the Colorado Symphony as they perform together.

On March 22 and 24, chart-topping recording artist Simone Dinnerstein joins the Boulder Phil for not one, but two, concertos: Gershwin's famous Rhapsody in Blue and the Colorado premiere of Philip Lasser's Piano Concerto, a work he wrote to embody the love he shares with Dinnerstein for the music of J.S. Bach.
Debussy's impressionistic La Mer ("The Sea") and Heitzeg's Ghosts of the Grasslands complement Lasser's French-American aesthetic. | Simone Dinnerstein |

Neil Bridge Jazz Trio, 3/30
| Neil Bridge Jazz Trio with Karen Lee on Vocals What Jazz means is not merely a word definition. It is an emotion felt when personalities express themselves using the art of music. Jazz is free flowing feelings that converse about the day and fine tuned fables that are told by masterful story tellers. The book that is written time and again by Neil Bridge and his Trio of insightful musicians is always an exciting one. The pieces are well arranged by Neil, but leave room for fresh ideas from the group, whom aren't afraid to bring their opinions into the mix. Adolph Mares lays down a steady bass that fulfills the rhythmic low end melodic harmonies around the groove that Kevin Smith tastefully taps on the drums. Its hard to miss, Miss Karen Lee's, dazzling presence and vocalizations that accompany Neil musically, physically, and spiritually by his side. When the clave clicks we are pushed to the front of the seat while they stay on the 2 edge of the beat, and then the group calms us down with a round of the swing style thats keeps jazz cool. The great music that flows from the Neil Bridge Jazz Trio, is a sophisticated symphony of sounds, merely an interpretative reflection of life, so come check 'em out and be part of something larger. This ain't New York, and not part of LA, we are Denver and Neil Bridge is here to stay. AFL-CIO and Working Families Lead Effort to Raise Minimum Wage
|
While Republicans in Washington, D.C., are doing their best to stop a federal increase to the minimum wage, working families and their allies across the country are fighting to increase the minimum wage at the state and local level. America's working families consistently support a minimum wage increase, supporting the idea that jobs should lift workers out of poverty, conservatives continue to rely upon disproven criticisms of increasing the wage. But Americans aren't buying the conservative lies and are demanding that Congress and the president raise the wage for millions of workers, including tipped workers. And many of them aren't waiting for Washington to get the job done, they're taking action across the country. The federal minimum wage has remained $7.25 an hour since 2009 and wages for tipped workers have been frozen at $2.13 an hour since 1991. Here's the latest news on the push for a higher minimum wage across the nation: Read On

Hip-Hop Star Common to Perform in Support of Nissan Workers
|
Hip-hop star Common, famous for songs like "I Used to Love H.E.R." and acting roles such as "Terminator Salvation" and "Happy Feet Too," is performing as part of a free show in support of workers who are organizing for a voice on the job at the Nissan plant in Canton, Miss. The workers are pushing for a vote to organize as part of the UAW. The show will take place Friday at 8 p.m. at the Jackson State University's Rose E. McCoy Auditorium. Common will be joined on stage by actor Danny Glover and local musicians and leaders.
UAW is engaged in an ongoing campaign to get a union vote at the Nissan Canton location. Workers at the Mississippi plant say the company relies too heavily on temporary workers who get reduced pay and benefits. Nissan's business practice of staffing plants with a high percentage of temporary workers, who earn lower wages, have limited benefits and have no job security, won't strengthen families and grow communities. They also say that Nissan is engaging in a campaign to intimidate workers to stay away from the union and imply that the plant will close if the union vote is successful.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
