Big-name artists such as Sarah Chang allow patrons to hear the fine musicians that surround her. (Colin Bell/Under license to EMI Classics/Courtesy photo)

There are certain things I've always resented a bit about the marketing of classical music.
One of my past pet peeves was what I would perceive as the overblown promotion of guest artists, particularly "big names," as a means of selling tickets. What I found bothersome about it was that the promotional materials would typically include a huge photo and name of the guest soloist, with whatever music they were playing in small type that you'd have to search for to notice.
I've come around to the realization that this is necessary.
After all, the big-name soloists are famous for a reason, and let's face it, they fill concert hall seats. But it still bothers me a little. I don't know how many people think like me, but it's usually the music on the program, rather than the people playing it, that draws me to a concert.
I started thinking about this again this month when I attended the Boulder Philharmonic concert with guest violinist Sarah Chang. Macky Auditorium was packed. Chang is the biggest guest artist the orchestra has engaged in some years, and her career has a wonderful connection to the city. Read On
A Crack in the Ice Between Musicians and Management
The Minnesota Orchestra in Concert as a Lockout Continues
By JAMES R. OESTREICH NY Times Published: February 6, 2013
MINNEAPOLIS - Sibelius's music is thought by many to reflect the long, deep winters of his native Finland. So if you're looking to Sibelius to shed a bit of warmth, it must be cold.
No, not the weather. (Well, that too.) What most needs thawing here is the frigid standoff between the board and management of the Minnesota Orchestra and its players, who have been locked out since Oct. 1, after they rejected management's proposal for a 32 percent cut in base pay and refused to make a counterproposal. Richard A. Herman lived in the Watergate for more than 40 years and was a longtime patron of the arts, but the shy railroad heir was virtually unknown in Washington social circles for much of his long life.
Until this week.
Family Matters of Greater Washington is set to hold a splashy news conference Wednesday at the National Press Club to announce that Herman, who died in November at 100, left the organization 60?percent of his vast estate - $28?million, which the group says is one of the largest gifts ever to a local social service organization. LABOR & POLITICS
Justice(s) at Work
"...the Knox decision highlights a disparity between unions and corporations that is highly relevant to the post-Citizens United world of corporate money in politics. The Citizens United decision appears to treat unions and corporations equally, giving both the First Amendment right to spend unlimited amounts of money. But as Professor Benjamin Sachs of Harvard Law School has pointed out, nonunion employees can withhold any money that would go to political activity, thus greatly shrinking the pool of money available, while a corporation's shareholders who object to the company's political spending have no equivalent way of dissenting."
By LINDA GREENHOUSE Linda Greenhouse on the Supreme Court and the law. NY Times
February 6, 2013
This column is prompted by the eye-catching headline that appeared two weeks ago: "Share of the Work Force in a Union Falls to a 97-Year Low, 11.3%." As the article explained, many factors - global, domestic, economic, political - have contributed to the steep decline in the unionized work force, in both the private and public sectors. The trend, while accelerating, isn't new. And on the surface, certainly, it has little to do with the Supreme Court. Read On
Save Our 6 Day Delivery!
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
As some of you have heard Postmaster General Pat Donahoe held a press conference yesterday to announce his intention to end Saturday delivery on August 5, 2013, even though current law mandates six-day delivery. We cannot let this happen. Our postal union brothers and sisters of NALC, APWU, and NPMHU as well as NRLCA (rural carriers) are all fighting against this. Please take 30 seconds and join in defending our six-day day delivery by signing on to the petition linked HERE. And please share with your friends and family.
Thank you for all you do.

Big Band Boogie Bash @ the Mercury Cafe, 2/16
Benefiting Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts
Over 130 young musicians are coming together to breathe new life into the perception of Big Band music, all in support of CCJA! Six college bands and three high school groups will participate in a day long big band festival. The event began in the 70's and used to feature almost all professional groups, but CCJA has re-invented it with a focus on youth. It is concert style, and will feature a large range of styles of music. There will be music for all ages and tastes. Let's make their their efforts worthwhile: - We need help spreading the word about the event. Please forward this email, or post on facebook, or call and invite your friends to come with you. - We need items for the silent auction that the CCJA board is hosting at the bash. We already have some great items, such as passes to the Telluride, Vail, and Jazz Aspen festivals, but if you know any businesses or individuals that would be willing to donate a good or service, that would be fantastic. - We have business sponsorships available for the event. It includes an ad in the program, PR materials on PR table, a link on our website, and 6 tickets to the event. - We need volunteers for the door, merchandise table, silent auction, stage set-up, and tear-down.
Tickets to the Bash are $15 general admission, and $10 students / 55+, and allow you to stay for as long as you'd like. They are available at the door, and online at jazzarts.org. All proceeds directly benefit CCJA programs.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
