Paraguay Landfill Orchestra
|
"The Landfill Harmonic of Paraguay has been receiving a lot of attention in anticipation of an upcoming documentary on this remarkable orchestra whose instruments are made from recycled trash. The town is built on a landfill and its inhabitants have very little hope or prospects for life. One man started making instruments out of trash to give the kids in the community something to look forward to. See more
In this Dec. 11, 2012 photo, young women carry their instruments as they walk alongside a polluted stream to their music practice session with "The Orchestra of Instruments Recycled From Cateura" in Cateura, a vast landfill outside Paraguay's capital of Asuncion, Paraguay. The community of Cateura could not be more marginalized. But the music coming from garbage has some families believing in a different future for their children. (AP Photo Jorge Saenz)

The [Spokane] Symphony's next challenge is to develop a bigger audience By Robert Herold The Pacific Northwest Inlander
December 18, 2012
"One thing does seem clear: The critical drop in "services" from 180 to 160, which the board used to justify its pay cuts, reflects almost entirely on the leadership's ineffective audience development efforts. I refer to run-outs to high schools, mini-performances, public recitals, those sorts of "services." The board says that the money is no longer there. But without bringing the orchestra to the community, what makes the board think that the community will come to the orchestra? On this the leadership might be instructed by the life and times of Maurice Abravanel. Already a famed European conductor, in 1947 he came to Salt Lake City and took over what, at the time, was just another community orchestra, the Utah Symphony. Thirty-two years later, when he retired, the Utah Symphony, by then "his orchestra," was nationally recognized. There is a reason why they renamed their concert hall after Abravanel instead of their biggest donor."

Jacksonville musicians' editorial
| Musicians claim symphony is disingenuous on finances
By Negotiating Committee Chair Susan Pardue, Andy Bruck, Kevin Casseday, Anna Genest, Jorge Pena and Peter Wright
Florida Times-Union December 21, 2012
The Dec. 4 Times-Union quoted Jacksonville Symphony Association Board Chair-elect Martin Connor saying, "It's hard to exaggerate the seriousness of our problem."
The article continued: "He was talking about the operating deficits the symphony has been experiencing for years and the accumulated debt, which he says is about $3 million."
Actually the Symphony Association exaggerates its problems with ease.
In November 2007, then-Board Chair James Van Vleck claimed that the "JSA has accumulated an approximate $3 million deficit since 2000."
The number of years that the $3 million figure has remained constant has prompted an investigation of the audited financial statements.
The results reveal that in years it has to negotiate with orchestra musicians, the association transfers out and restricts assets from the operating fund and inflates the draw on its line of credit. Read On

Survey shows under-25s want to explore classical music
| Under-25s keen to explore genres other than pop, with classical music and jazz at the top of the list, concludes a new YouGov poll. classicfm December 13, 2012 A YouGov poll of 2,000 people under 25 has shown that 60% of them are keen to explore new genres of music outside of pop, with 31% of that group wanting to learn more about classical music. The survey also showed that 32% of under-25s would like to know more about jazz music, more than twice as many as people over 45 (14%). The under-25 group joined over-55s in being most interested in classical music, possibly suggesting that interest in the genre has skipped a generation. Read On

Please Contribute to Labor's Community Agency
| TIS THE SEASON... As we approach the holidays, for many of us it's a festive time of year as we look forward to spending time celebrating with our family and friends. Yet, there are many people in our communities that this time of year is not "happy", "wonderful", "joyous", nor "cheerful". Each year, Labor's Community Agency asks for help to replenish the Agency's Emergency Assistance Fund, which is primarily used to assist union members, their families, and the community with emergency assistance during time of crisis or need. Hunger, homelessness, and despair continue to affect our community. Requests for help continue to be unprecedented with the poor economy and continued job loss and Labor's Community Agency has become overburdened. You can help... your generosity will make a difference. Please help us help those in need by contributing to Labor's Community Agency's Annual Emergency Assistance Fund Donation Drive. Together we can bring hope to those in need!

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
