Markus Reuter & Colorado Chamber Orchestra - Todmorden 513 - Practice exerpt
Markus Reuter & Colorado Chamber Orchestra - Todmorden 513 - Jan 21, 3013 Rehearsal

Markus Reuter's Todmorden 513 is a complex work of algorithmic composition of an hour's duration. Given Reuter's linguistic background, one might think that the title is an exercise in existential dread in German as "Tod" means "death" and "morden" means "to murder" - forming a truly grim portmanteau. However, the title's sourcing is actually of a small town in northern England, northeast of Manchester. 513 refers to its construction: it is a continuous movement and sequence of five hundred and thirteen harmonies and triads generated by a combinatorial compositional technique of Reuter's own design. The notes of each harmony or triad is then fed back into the same algorithm, resulting in a progression of chords and note clusters of highly varied density, ranging from simple two note harmonies to dense twelve note chords spread across several octaves. Starting on an A flat, the sequences of pitches form a kind of melodic or thematic line throughout. The rhythms of the performing instrumental trios and quartets were derived from the chord sequences themselves, which were looped across the whole piece, mapped to the notes of each chord, then mixed together. From there it was split into three or four independent voices respectively. The result is a shifting set of harmonic densities -- at times quite spare -- ranging from a harmony of two instruments to other moments of thick and lush instrumentation.

Minn. Legislature: Committee examining an 'epidemic of lockouts'
Graydon Royce
Minneapolis Star Tribune
January 23, 2013

Committee hears testimony on lockout situations in Minnesota but promised no legislative action is forthcoming.

With three high-profile labor lockouts continuing in Minnesota, Rep. Joe Atkins, DFL-Inver Grove Heights, told a overflow crowd at his Commerce and Consumer Protection Finance and Policy Committee meeting Wednesday evening that there is "an epidemic of lockouts, not just in Minnesota, but nationally."

Atkins' committee took more than an hour of testimony on the impact of lockouts on Minnesota, but he promised no imminent action.

"Legislation is being contemplated to prevent or disincentivize the probability of lockouts," he said. "But we will save that for another day."

Though the hearing was intended to address lockouts in general, statements from people affected by the Twin Cities' two major orchestras dominated the
session.

Mark Thorson of the citizens' group Save Our SPCO said that when a nonprofit entity accepts special status or grants paid for by tax revenues, "the state and the corporation have a duty to ensure that the benefits to the public are protected."

Court says Obama exceeded authority in making appointments
By Robert Barnes and Steven Mufson, Published: January 25

President Obama exceeded his constitutional authority by making appointments when the Senate was on a break last year, a federal appeals court ruled Friday. The court's broad ruling would sharply limit the power that presidents throughout history have used to make recess appointments in the face of Senate opposition and inaction.

A unanimous three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit flatly rejected the Obama administration's rationale for appointing three members of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) while the Senate was on a holiday break.

But the New York City Council yesterday overwhelmingly (44-4) passed a bill that prohibits discrimination against the unemployed in hiring.

The $240 billion the top 100 billionaires in the world made in 2012 would completely eliminate extreme poverty, the report concludes.

He profiles Vic and Lucy DiBitetto-a school bus driver and matron on the same Staten Island bus route caring for kids with autism, multiple sclerosis and physical and developmental challenges.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
