Singers give pitch-perfect send-off to vocalist Becky Kelly Barnett
1/12/2013 By Joanne Davidson The Denver Post Becky Kelly Barnett's vocals helped propel the Jerry Barnett Orchestra to national prominence. "She was the most soulful singer I know," said former band leader Jim Vessiny.
There was never any doubt that Becky Kelly Barnett was cut out to be a singer.
As a toddler, she'd hum songs in her high chair every time the family sat down to eat. By the time she was a teenager, she had developed a powerful set of pipes and a range that made her the envy of fellow vocalists.
Rock 'n' roll, Motown and R&B were her specialty, and she performed with such popular local bands as the Legendary 4Nikators before auditioning for Moments Notice in 1982 and winning the heart of its leader, Jerry Barnett. They were married in San Francisco in 1989. Read On

The value of tickets sold for the orchestra's performances in November and December totaled $2.8 million, an increase of 62% over the same months in 2011. Holiday Festival ticket sales increased to a record of $1,177,271, 16% above the previous record of $1,013,000 in 2007. Read On
New Jersey Symphony President Quits After Questions on His Past

Richard Dare made a splash last year as an outspoken entrepreneur turned arts administrator and started work on Jan. 2 as the president and chief executive of the New Jersey Symphony, with the promise that his business acumen would bring it new luster.
The New Jersey Symphony said "concerns about the public perception" led it to accept its president's resignation.
There is a company traveling around the country attempting to hire our musicians for the purpose of recording music for a new television show (The Choir), based around the production of choirs. The AFM has been in contact with this company (Shed Music US) for the purpose of signing the appropriate AFM Agreement for this show. Unfortunately, they have chosen not to sign with us and have managed to slip into three of our Locals that we know of and record their shows.
It is imperative that you advise your members that this is not an AFM covered production and to remind everyone that to perform services in the absence of the applicable AFM Agreement is a violation of the AFM National Bylaws and subject to severe penalties.
Our offices will continue with our pursuit to resolve the signatory issue with this production, and will advise everyone if there is a change in its non-union status. If you are approached by anyone regarding employment on The Choir, or if you have additional information about this production or further questions, please contact our office at 323-461-5401.

More CEOs Telling US We Need to Cut Social Security and Medicare Benefits
As if we didn't already have enough on our plates (having to fend off attacks from the "Fix the Debt" CEOs), now there's another group of CEOs, the Business Roundtable, telling us we need to "modernize," a.k.a. cut, Social Security and Medicare benefits by raising the eligibility ages and reducing cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs). How helpful.
Health care experts have long said that a public health insurance option not only would provide lower-cost health insurance for those who choose it but would also force private insurers to lower their premiums. A public option was a key element of the 2009 House-passed version of health care reform, but it did not make it to the final bill.
Now, as lawmakers focus on deficit reduction, with many Republicans calling for cuts in health care benefits and shifting even more costs to working families, the creation of a public option as a deficit-reducing tool-along with its other benefits-is back on the table.
What would it cost if the nation's crumbling infrastructure of bridges, roads, rails, sewer systems, power grids, airports and more is allowed to deteriorate at its current pace? Some 3.5 million jobs and $3.1 trillion in lost economic output by 2020. What would it cost to avoid that? About $1.1 trillion in additional investment.
Sure sounds like a great return on the investment and it is, according to a new report from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The study, Failure to Act, finds that:

Community Band Seeking New Members
Our non-profit Mile High Community Band seeks musicians of all ages, teen through adult, and at all levels of accomplishment. Our organization's mission is to provide rewarding music education and performance opportunities for youth and adults at all skill levels. We have various bands for different skill levels, beginning through advanced, including jazz/blues and concert bands. In particular, we welcome additional brass and woodwind musicians.
We meet Thursday evenings at North High School (2960 Speer Blvd Denver) for rehearsals. Monthly memberships begin at $25-$35/month, but we can waive fees and provide instruments for those who need them - no one with an interest in playing music will be turned away. Family discounts also available.
