Namaste~
If you could be anywhere today, where would you be? If you could be with anyone in particular, who would you want to have beside you? If your idea of the perfect week were stretched ahead, what would that look like? Do you have a clear image in your head? Good. Now, how far is the picture in your mind from your reality? More importantly, what are you doing to better align your day-to-day decisions and habits with how you want your life to be? We will always have struggles. There will be challenges and pain and disappointments. But my question for you on this first day of a brand new year is about your choices. Are you creating the life you want- even if it's one tiny step at a time- and are you staying ever mindful of cultivating happiness and contentment? In 2013, I want to make better choices. I'd like to work less and play more. I'd like to spend a little more time with family and friends. I want to have at least one big, new adventure and visit a place in this world I have never been before. I want to be kinder to myself, and more patient and loving to everyone else. When I open my eyes and look around, I want to see the picture in my mind. And I wish that for you, as well.
Peace, Jill
what is power yoga? |
get strong!
So perhaps you've seen this new addition to the blue's schedule and wondered just what IS Power Yoga? What makes it different from Vinyasa yoga? Power Yoga is a general term that is applied to many different styles of active yoga practice, including:
Ashtanga Yoga, a set sequence of vigorous postures, developed in Mysore, India by master teacher Pattabhi Jois; Beryl Bender Birch's Power Yoga, a more westernized (but no less athletic) approach to Ashtanga yoga, developed and popularized in the 1990s; Baron Baptiste's Power Yoga, a challenging vinyasa-style practice first developed in the 1940s by Walt Baptiste and influenced by the teachings of BKS Iyengar and TKV Desikachar (contemporaries of Pattabhi Jois).
Given all the shades and blends of yoga styles that populate this powerful genre, the term Power Yoga won't tell you exactly what any given power class will be like. A teacher's background and training will have a lot to do with his or her teaching style--and it's a good idea to ask your teacher questions if you are curious about particular aspects of the class. But here's what you can expect from almost all power classes:
--Heat. The teacher may heat up the temperature of the room (though not as much as during a traditional "hot yoga" class), and the practice will definitely heat up your body. Be prepared to sweat!
--Strength. There will be plenty of standing poses to help build strength in the legs and the core. Inversions and arm balances are also distinct possibilities. And even if the poses are held for long periods, you should expect to move a lot, building strength and flexibility throughout the body.
--Focus. The challenging nature of these classes not only works the body but helps focus and balance the mind, so that you leave class feeling stronger, refreshed, and ready to tackle the rest of your day.
Power Yoga is about empowering the student--on the mat and in life. Next time you're looking to stoke the inner flames or build your resolve, check it out--we've got three Power Yoga classes at the blue:
Mondays at 7:30am with Christy
Wednesdays at 12:00pm with Elizabeth
Fridays at 7:30am with Elizabeth

blueversary benefits hospice of wake county
Can you believe that next month we will be celebrating six years of yoga with you? As usual, we will be offering three days of class-by-donation to support Hospice of Wake County. This wonderful organization provides physical, emotional, and spiritual care to those living with an advanced illness, their caregivers, and those who have lost a loved one. Every donation you make enters your name into a drawing for gifts from local businesses, including everything from free classes at the blue to gift certificates for massage, dinner out, a wine tasting event and even an Annual Membership to O2 Fitness! Our goal is to raise at least $5,000, which will fund 33 days of hospice care.
A full list of prizes (and the class during which they will be raffled!) will be available before the event. Mark your calendar!
