Challenge Mountain announces what's in store
Challenge Mountain has invested in a new facility for its Resale Store that will support the demands of current operations and provide a strong foundation for future growth. The mission of Challenge Mountain is to enrich lives and empower individuals living with disabilities through year-round adaptive recreation, and the Resale Store is the organization's primary funding source. The new store will be located next to McDonald's at 1100 Boyne Avenue and will open in early 2016. The new facility will offer increased sales space, a prime location providing increased visibility, a structurally solid steel building, easier access for donating goods and an open floor plan to improve the shopping experience. Executive Director Elizabeth Gertz Looze said renovations will be completed in two phases. Phase I renovations began in November and are scheduled to be completed in early 2016. The full remodel will be complete by the end of October 2016. To see updates on progress, visit and "like" the Challenge Mountain Resale Store on Facebook. In the meantime, the current Resale Store at 1158 Boyne Avenue (M-75) will remain open. Full press release.
CONTRIBUTIONS for the project are already coming in and renovations have begun, thanks to the generous support of The Charles J. Strosacker Foundation, Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, Charlevoix County Community Foundation, Great Lakes Energy People Fund and hours of volunteer labor.

Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital debuts this week
A new name is on the hospital sign outside, but the same smiling faces and health care expertise will continue to meet community needs. Charlevoix Area Hospital officially became Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital on December 1, following an agreement signed earlier this fall to fully integrate the institution into Munson Healthcare. "This is an exciting day for the hospital and the community because it ensures access to great local care will continue well into the future," said Ruth Hoppe, M.D., chair of the Charlevoix hospital board. As part of the agreement between the hospital and Munson Healthcare, she will now sit on the Munson Healthcare Board of Directors. Over the past few months, teams from both organizations have worked hard to ensure a smooth transition and have obtained the necessary governmental approvals. Patients will see little change in the day-to-day operation of the hospital. Care will be delivered by the same caring staff and physicians. The closer integration with Munson Healthcare is expected to expand the range of clinical services available to the hospital and improve the coordination of care locally. In addition to the hospital name change, physician practices and clinics associated with the hospital will see name changes as well over the next few months. As an example, Boyne Area Medical Center will become Munson Healthcare Boyne Area Health Center. A new website for the hospital has launched here. Full news release.

Food pantry extends its hours, now open Tuesday mornings
Good Neighbors Food Pantry is extending its hours. The pantry has been open from 2 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, and is adding 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Pantry director Susan Conklin commented: "We've seen our numbers grow, but we have also realized that only being open in the afternoon may make it difficult for some people to use the pantry. Instead of changing our hours, we thought it would be more beneficial to add hours in the morning on a trial basis and see how it goes." Conklin said she and the Good Neighbors board of directors have been "very pleased with how things are going. We had a quick start and a steep learning curve, but we've had lots of help. The support from the community has been tremendous, including our many dedicated volunteers. As an example, we were able to serve 67 families with Thanksgiving meal boxes, and it was a joint effort with the Boyne Community Pantry and the Seventh Day Adventist Pantry. We will be working with Boyne Area Community Christmas to reach everyone who needs a Christmas meal box by covering seniors and others who don't have children at home."
> Good Neighbors Food Pantry can be reached at 231-497-8677, goodneighborsboyne@gmail.com, or find us on Facebook. The mailing address is PO Box 35, Boyne City.

Eta Nu thanks Pat O'Brien staff for donation
A few members of the Boyne Eta Nu Women's Club stopped by Pat O'Brien's Real Estate office after Thanksgiving to thank them for their generous donation to the Dress For Chill program. More than 160 Boyne City Elementary and Head Start children participated in this program receiving winter coats, pants, boots, hats and gloves. "We have so many generous organizations and residents in this community that give to this program but without the generous help of Pat's team we could not accomplish our goal of providing winter outerwear to those kids in need," said Nancy Shear, chairman of Dress For Chill.
"For the past three years the entire office has adopted this local program as an annual charity cause and we couldn't be happier to do so," said Jane Booze, Marketing Director for Pat O'Brien's and Associates.

CREATE Community Arts Studio brings a new artistic vision to Boyne
From the Northern Express: Longtime artist Sara Manchester grew up in East Jordan, graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy in 1997, attended the Chicago Art Institute - and then stepped away from her personal artistic pursuits to "be sensible," moving back Up North in 2001 to chase a career in graphic design. The result? "I hated it!" laughed Manchester. "I just really did not like designing for other people." After spending some time considering her options, Manchester attended an art therapy workshop out of state on a whim and "loved it," she said. She returned to college, this time in Indiana, where she received her Master of Arts in art therapy. "Then I went back to Boyne City and I thought, well, now that I'm pursuing something that I actually do love, how do I make a living with it?" The answer to that question was to literally create a job for herself, and Create Community Arts Studio was begun. Full story.
