THANK YOU FOR MAKING 2013 A GREAT YEAR

To all of you who consider yourselves part of Migrant Clinicians Network...

For all you do to increase access to care for the special populations we serve...

For giving your time; being part of our migration health and clinical training webinars; enrolling your patients in Health Network to ensure their continuity of care; shining the spotlight on environmental and occupational health and worker safety; for training migrant men to become advocates against violence; for your participation on our advisory committees; your contributions of time; and last but not least, for your generous donations that help to make all this possible...

However you connect to MCN, please accept our deep appreciation for making 2013 a year that advanced health justice for the mobile poor. May 2014 lead to greater success.

From all of us at MCN

MCN applauds progress on the Worker Protection Standard (WPS)

Migrant Clinicians Network welcomes news that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will soon propose revisions to the Worker Protection Standard (WPS), which provides workplace protections for farmworkers exposed to pesticides. MCN has long urged the EPA to include stronger protections for farmworkers in the WPS.

It has been more than 20 years since these rules have been updated and the current standards are inadequate. MCN calls for a strong worker protection rule to include improved safety training requirements, safety precautions limiting farmworkers' contact with pesticides, and mechanisms to improve enforcement of workplace protections. Read more...

For more information about the WPS, join MCN on March 5, 2014 for a national conversation via webinar. Learn more about the revised rule and how to voice your support to strengthen protections for farmworkers. Register Now

Spotlight on Promising Practice
FLU-FIT and FLU-FOBT Programs allow healthcare providers to increase access to colorectal cancer screening by offering home tests to patients at the time of their annual flu shots. Successful FLU-FIT and FLU-FOBT Programs have been implemented in community health centers, in a public hospital, and in a large health maintenance organization.
They have also been pilot tested in commercial pharmacies.

MCN receives Elton John AIDS Foundation grant for Bridge to Care!

Through Bridge to Care, MCN's Health Network patient navigation program will ensure that recently incarcerated and detained HIV+ individuals returning to society or their country of origin--in circumstances where mobility creates barriers to effective care--will receive the treatment they need. MCN's goal is to improve disease management, treatment completion and, and ultimately, improved health status for this population, who are economically, socially, and geographically marginalized.

MCN's Hombres Unidos violence prevention program receives Roth Award!

Migrant Clinicians Network is excited to announce that our Hombres Unidos violence prevention program received the Mary Byron Project's 2013 Celebrating Solutions ROTH Award.

"Your outstanding efforts to break the cycle of violence serve as a model for the nation." - Mary Byron Project

The Mary Byron Project (MBP) is a national thought leader on domestic violence. The Roth Award specifically recognizes programs that address the needs of underserved populations.

Hombres Unidos Contra la Violencia Familiar empowers Latino migrant men to become advocates against sexual and intimate partner violence. As a primary prevention program, it is the first of its kind in the nation. Men learn together in community settings with peer facilitators about violence and healthy relationships. The supportive atmosphere allows men to open up and speak about issues seldom discussed publicly.

"The workshop taught me to face my emotions and control them before reacting. ... It allowed me to discover new things about family violence, and most importantly, how to avoid it completely." Hombres Unidos participant

Hombres Unidos is one of several MCN initiatives that increase access to care and reduce disparities for migrant workers and other mobile underserved populations. It builds on 20 years of work to reduce sexual/intimate partner violence in the migrant community with promotor/community health worker training and community-based programs for women, families and men.

We celebrate the ROTH Award's recognition of Hombres Unidos and its impact toward our pursuit of health justice for the mobile poor.
